What went on? Well, sir, we were on duty at the VCP near the airport, with Captain Harris in command.

We were doing routine checks when a call came through from Intelligence to say they 9d received a tip that some documents they were looking for could be found in a vehicle passing our way. They told us to look out for a Mercedes, but we didn 9t have details of the colour, model, the time it might pass us or anything else. Not much to go on, then?

So what did you do - build a roadblock? Yes, sir. Unfortunately Mercedes cars are very common here and we had our hands full doing detailed searches of all the Mercedes that came through.

But you found the documents, I understand. Yes, sir. By 1400 hours, we 9d searched about 60 cars and we were beginning to think it was just a false alarm.

Then, at about 14.10 Sergeant Thomas stopped a white Mercedes with 3 men inside . He called me over and we started the routine procedure 3 underneath , outside and inside, the boot and engine... And so what tipped you off that this was the right vehicle?

Well, sir, the odd thing was the boot was empty but there were 3 suitcases on the back seat, next to one of the passengers. And the documents were in the suitcases? No, sir.

But when Captain Harris asked the man in the back to get out, the man began to look nervous 3hot and sweating. Then he started talking a lot 3 you know, complaining that we stopped them for no real reason, generally showing all the give-away signs. So then we thought the documents would be in the suitcases - but they were all empty!

At last, we noticed there was an area of recent stitching on the back seat underneath one of the suitcases... and when we cut open the leather seat covers, we found the papers. Good- that was a piece of good work.

Thank you, sir. We could easily have missed it, especially as we were getting a little tired. To tell the truth, we thought we were starting to miss things after so many hours.

And it was difficult to be patient and courteous to everybody we stopped. And did you have any trouble with the men in the Mercedes? No, We reported the incident and the MPs came and took them into custody.

And were they the documents that Intelligence were looking for? Yes, sir. Apparently they were.

Congratulations. Well done. A good job all round.

8 9
