earned a reputation as an innovative leader in health care. While we value our rich history, we 9re excited about our new plans for growth. In 2008, Baptist Health System announced plans for a $75 million facility expansion plan here on the Princeton campus.

Construction is expected to begin in 2009 to completely redesign, renovate and expand the hospital 9s 14 operating rooms; replace the endoscopy suite; improve surgery support areas and infrastructure and make it easier for patients and visitors to End t/eir wa@. The plans for Princeton 9s campus expansion dovetail with plans to increase services in Hoover, the only city in the state with more than 60,000 residents and no hospital. Since we opened Princeton Hoover Baptist Medical Center in 2006, we have accomplished a great deal in providing care to the community, but there is more to be done.

In keeping with our Mission, we plan to add to t/ese services wit/ a new professional ofEce building to /ouse a 10,000-square-foot diagnostic center and provide space for 25 3 30 p/@sician ofEces. Completion of t/is expansion, targeted for 2010, will provide easier, more comprehensive access to physicians and outpatient care for area residents. W/ile t/e ofEce building will add services at the Hoover location, we set high standards of service to our patients.

To best serve the community 9s need and demand for health care, Baptist Health System plans the construction of Hoover Baptist Medical Center, pending regulatory approval. The new hospital will offer a full complement of clinical services, including a physician-staffed 24/7 emergency department, to be located at the current Princeton Hoover site off Highway 150. Of course, our good news is not limited to the future.

The employees and physicians of Princeton 9s cardiac services received gold, silver and bronze achievement awards with the American Heart Association 9s cGet With The Guidelines d for implementing higher standards of cardiac care. This recognition was noted not only at the state level, but also in a national magazine, U.S. News and World Report.

To provide patients with state-of-the-art care, we continue to invest in new, innovative medical technology, such as the da Vinci S HD Surgery System . To our premier diagnostic imaging center, we recently added the latest generation of hybrid imaging with a new nuclear camera, the GE In?nia Hawkeye 4 . Our medical staff of highly-trained clinicians is growing and we 9re adding new physician specialties to meet the needs of patients.

The participation and leadership of our dedicated physicians help to inspire and ensure the continuing success of our outstanding medical education program . Princeton trains new physicians in clinical specialties, such as radiology, pathology, surgery and internal medicine, to promote high standards of medical care now and in the years ahead. Our role as a good neighbor is maintained through such community efforts as our adopt-a-school, Hemphill Elementary, and the Princeton Achievers.

Our participation in health initiatives to educate and detect heart disease early with Heart Aware and Search Your Heart are helping to make a difference in battling the nation 9s number one killer. Exciting things are underway at Princeton. Our ministry is strong and growing; it truly remains a ministry of advancing hope.

I encourage you to call on us 3 and rely on Princeton Baptist Medical Center to meet your health care needs. From its earliest days, nursing has played a vital role in this faith-based ministry. When the Birmingham Baptist Association acquired the hospital in January 1922, the philosophy that the patient was the most important person in the hospital was adopted.

The patient-focused philosophy continued when Ida V. Moffett became the hospital 9s director of nursing in 1941. During her 73-year-nursing career, Mrs.

Moffett became and continues to be a symbol of compassion for Princeton and Baptist Health System. During the decades of her nursing leadership at the Baptist hospitals, she was a mentor to thousands of nurses. She consistently communicated her loving concern and friendship to students, nurses and coworkers.

She instilled in them her high ideals and values concerning patient care. Her legacy continues to serve as a role model for the nursing profession not only in Alabama, but also throughout the country. In recognition of her contributions, Princeton each year recognizes performance excellence among its nurses with the Ida V.

Moffett Award. It is t/at level of caring and compassion paired wit/ clinical expertise t/at deEnes t/e standard of excellence for Princeton 9s nursing care. It is a standard ascribed to by its nurses; a call for commitment and dedication to the well-being of each patient as well as their family.

Princeton nurses recognize the difference that caring nurses can make in the lives of patients. They 9re proud to be part of a multidisciplinary health care team whose goal is the highest quality of life for their patients. Princeton nurses also understand the important contributions that patients and families can make as members of the health care team.

Their participation is appreciated; in fact, it 9s encouraged. Princeton recently established the Patient Action Line 3 PAL, as another response method to address the needs of patients in providing the best possible care. A simple phone call to PAL allows a patient or family member to reach a medical professional at any time.

Striving for excellence and caring with compassion are longstanding traditions at Princeton 3 traditions Princeton nurses take very much to heart. n<9si60 Ca9. The Center for Therapeutic Angiogenesis, under the direction of Princeton cardiologist Farrell Mendelsohn, M.D., is dedicated to performing research in the area of cardiovascular diseases to evaluate medications that stimulate the angiogenesis process. At/erosclerosis is a major cause of deat/ in t/e United States.

It begins with the accumulation of cholesterol in the wall of arteries, eventually leading to the formation of plaque. SigniEcant plaque build-up can lead to obstructed blood vessels, such as those leading to the heart (coronary artery disease or CAD) or those leading to the legs and feet (peripheral arterial disease or PAD). The drugs that are being studied are meant to stimulate the growth of new blood vessels to improve the circulation to an area that is currently blocked by atherosclerosis to ctrick d the body into making its own bypass.

The research protocols vary according to the clinical aspect being studied. The Center for Therapeutic Angiogenesis at Princeton is one of the leading sites in the nation in this area of research and treats patients from all over the nation with severe heart disease and peripheral vascular disease. For information about current studies, call 205-780-4330, extension 234, or visit www.CenterforTherapeuticAngiogenesis.org.

The Electrophysiology Service at Princeton provides a full range of outpatient and inpatient procedures to diagnose and treat various cardiac rhythm abnormalities and heart failure. Electrophysiologic studies and ablations require 2 - 4 hours as catheters are guided into the heart chambers while the patient is sedated. The catheters 9 electrodes gather data and a variety of electrical measurements are made.

These help the physician identify the type and source of the rhythm abnormality and may help determine the need for the implant of pacemakers and/or implantable cardioverter deEbrillators (ICDs). The implant of pacemakers and ICDs is performed with the patient in the sedated state. A small incision, usually in the area of the left shoulder, is performed, and pacing wires are advanced into the heart through large veins.

The wires are connected to the device generator which is placed under the skin in the area of the incision. These devices can perform a variety of important and life-saving functions, including the corrections of slow or fast heart rhythms, and may help improve heart failure symptoms. When appropriate, ablation therapy can be performed during the EP study.

This non-surgical procedure treats many types of arrhythmias by ablating or caltering d the pathway that causes the disruption to the regular rhythm of the heart.
