M OSTPHYSICIANSPECIALTIESSAW inreases at or just above the rate of inflation in 2004 according to a survey of members of the American Medical Group Association (AMGA). Primary care specialties saw increases of 6 percent to 8.8 percent, after sev- eral years of declining compensation or negligible increases. The AMGA mailed the survey to more than 2,600 medical groups across the country in February 2005.

RSM McGladrey received 197 valid re- sponses, representing approximately 34,000 providers and published the results in August. During 2004, the survey found the three specialties that experienced the largest increases in compensation were general surgery (8.89 percent), pediatrics & adolescent (8.76 per- cent), and hematology & oncology (8.52 percent). Primary care physi- cians in family medicine and internal medicine also saw healthy increases after several years of negligible in- creases or decreases: family medicine (6.31 percent) and internal medicine (7.57 percent).

Three specialties which had seen some of the largest increases in 2003 received among the lowest increases for 2004: Cardiology increased by 0.07 percent, cardiac/thoracic surgery by 1.13 per- cent, and gastroenterology by 1.07 percent. cWe are gratified to see that prima- ry care specialties are finally seeing increases, d said Donald W. Fisher, PhD, the president ... more. less.

and chief execu- tive officer of the American Medical Group Association.

cThis year, howev- er, increases across the board were below 9 percent, after years of sharp increases in certain high-demand spe- cialties. As compensation increases slow, the cost of practicing medicine continues to rise. d AMGA, headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, represents med- ical groups, including large integrat- ed health-care delivery systems.
