JASCO Pulse eNewsletter 3 November 10, 2006 Dear JASCO Members and Friends: A few new things have been recently added to our calendar that might be of interest to you or someone you know. Next week, there is an informational seminar on Thursday for Japanese families regarding financial planning for higher education. This seminar will be presented in Japanese and is free to attendees.

The week after Thanksgiving, JASCO will hold a Winter Craft Workshop on sashiko , a traditional Japanese stitching technique. If you 9re looking for a new hobby or need a unique idea for a holiday present, join us to learn the basic techniques of this needlecraft and start on a simple, yet beautiful project that will turn you into a sashiko expert in no time! Finally, applications for JASCO 9s 2007 Japanese Language Speech Contest are now available.

Interested high school and university students can submit their applications for their chance to compete for cool prizes in the Contest on Saturday, March 3, 2007, on The Ohio State University 9s campus. The deadline to apply is February 7, 2007, so start practicing now! More information on these and other events are below.

Dr. Emoto is the author of the best- selling books: Messages from Water , The Hidden Messages in Water and The True Power of Water .<br><br> Tickets are $30 for pre-registered attendees and $40 the day of the event. JASCO Social Outing: Bonenkai 3 Thursday, December 7, 6:00 p.m.<br><br> 3 8:00 p.m. Mark your calendars now as preparations are underway for JASCO 9s Bonenkai. This traditional, Japanese salute to the end of the year will take place on Thursday, December 7, at a location to be determined.<br><br> Join your fellow JASCO members for food, fun and drinks to celebrate the end of the year. (An e-mail will be sent next week with more details!) 7.<br><br> Cultural Event: cA Thousand Cranes d Play at Toledo School for the Arts Junior High Theatre, 333 14 th Street, Toledo 43624 3 Friday, December 8, 7:00 p.m. Presented by the Toledo School for the Arts Junior Division, this play is a moving, true-story about a young girl who was a victim of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. To learn more about this performance or to purchase tickets, please call 419-246-8732 or visit http://ts4arts.org . 8.<br><br> Application available for Suzuka English Fellow Program (SEF); deadline December 4, 2006 The Suzuka English Fellow Program (SEF) aims to enhance English language education in Suzuka, Mie- ken, Japan, and to promote international exchange at the local level primarily through the fostering of ties between Japanese junior high school students and SEF program participants. The SEF participants serve as Assistant English Teachers in a local government organization (the Suzuka Board of Education) as well as local kindergartens, elementary and junior high schools. Applicants must be an undergraduate or graduate student at the time of application (or recently graduated) and expect to have a B.A./B.S.<br><br> by July 2007. Applicants must also hold U.S. citizenship, be native speakers of English, have the ability to acclimate to living and office conditions different from those in the U.S.<br><br> and demonstrate a sincere interest in Japan and Japanese culture (e.g. studies or are currently studying the Japanese culture and/or language.) The contest is open to high school and university students in Ohio who have not lived in Japan for more than six months or who do not come from homes where Japanese is spoken regularly. Speeches are three-minutes in length and can cover any topic.<br><br> Applicants must submit a standard-sized cassette recording of their speech along with an original, handwritten version of the speech and one photocopy by Wednesday, February 7, 2007. Submissions for each category (high school and university) will be reviewed by a panel of Japanese-speaking individuals, and finalists will be chosen to compete in the contest on Saturday, March 3, 2007, on The Ohio State University campus. Application available for Youth For Understanding USA (YFA USA) scholarships to Japan through Japan-US Mutual Understanding Program (JUMP); deadline February 13, 2007 YFU USA is currently accepting applications for full-year scholarships to Japan.<br><br> The Japan-US Mutual Understanding Program for the 21 st Century (JUMP) offers 25 high school students the opportunity to spend an academic year in Japan. Sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Japan, JUMP commemorates the 50 th anniversary of the signing of the San Francisco Peace Treaty. Prior language skills in Japanese are not required; however, applicants must have strong interests in Japanese culture and language. JUMP recipients are required to depart for Japan in early March 2007 and return to the U.S.<br><br> in January 2008. JUMP recipients must pay a $600 tuition contribution; the rest of the tuition is covered by the JUMP scholarship. Personal expenses for passports, visas and spending money are not included.<br><br> The deadline to apply is February 13, 2007.
