An object of great complexity, yet one with a sin- gular use in mind - it is designed to kill. The truth of the sword has been shrouded in antiquity, and the Renaissance martial arts that brought it to being are long for- gotten.
The ancient practitioners lent us all they knew through their manuscripts. As gunslingers of the Renaissance they were western heroes with swords, and they lived and died by them. Yet today their history remains cloaked under a shadow of legend.
I n a confusing and ambiguous world, nothing makes more sense than a good, old-fashioned sword fight. d 3 Kevin Hagopian, Senior Lecturer, PennState University c \x4 T he ... more.

sword reigned supreme as the weapon of choice for thousands of years, yet upon the advent of gun powder it was eventually supplanted by more ef6cient weapons. Nevertheless, the sword has lived on in part as a great symbol, shining brightly in some of Hollywood 9s biggest movies. Reclaiming The Blade rediscovers the original histo- ry of this ancient weapon.

Narrated by acclaimed Welsh actor John Rhys-Davies, this feature doc- umentary traces the sword 9s true history through- out the ages. The 6lm brings to life our fascination with swords in popular media and the emergence of a worldwide movement to reclaim the ancient art of medieval and renaissance martial arts. Reclaiming The Blade was initially born out of writer/director Daniel McNicoll 9s research on histori- cal warfare for the script, Glastonbury: Isle of Light.

His personal interest in the sword and devotion to research helped get the project off the ground. Pro- ducer and director of photography Erica Black recalls, cDaniel's enthu- siasm and creativity are contagious and I could sense this was a story that needed to be told. Up to this point, Historical European Martial Arts have been over-shadowed by the more culturally popular Asian Martial Arts.

While both East and West have much to offer in this 6eld, I felt that Western Martial Arts were largely an untold story. d Rhys-Davies shared in McNicoll's af6nity for the blade and has a deep appreciation for the project: cThe sword resonates in our unconscious. Think of the words we use to describe it: a trusty sword, a true blade. The 6gure of Justice carries a scale in one hand, a sword in the other. d Production started in October of 2005.

Prin- cipal photography continued over the next year and a half. cInitially we thought the story was go- ing to be much more speci6c, covering only a few characters," recounts Black "but along the way, the 6lm gained a greater scope with the sword really becoming the central character of the story. The 6lmmakers traveled the globe to talk with historians, archaeologists, research scientists and renaissance martial artists from Europe, America and Asia.

Galatia Films sat down with Hollywood actors, the swordmasters who train them, and those who produce the swords for the blockbusters they star in. The result has carved out a new path for documentary 6lm making. Through the combination of historical research and good old-fashioned Hollywood swashbuckling, Galatia Films have created an in-depth and entertaining exploration of a long-neglected aspect of history.

cThe Sword resonates in our unconscious. Europe particularly pres- ents an extremely rich culture of Western Martial Arts groups. The 6lm features footage from Renaissances Martial Arts groups throughout Europe, in - cluding Sweden 9s Stockholm Historical Fencing Society and London 9s Schola Gladiatoria.

Also included from Europe are the well-known Boars Tooth Fight School, The School of Traditional Medieval Fencing, France 9s De Taille et d 9Estoc, Germany 9s Arts of Mars, and Poland 9s Ring- schule Wroclaw ARMA-PL. The 6lmmakers discovered an abundance of previously untapped resources. cOne of the most dif6cult parts in creating the 6lm was knowing exactly what to include", remarks Black, "There are so many individual threads to this story.

Given unlimited time we would have liked to explore each and every one. In the end though, I hope this will lead us to a greater opportunity to delve deeper into this subject in the future. d The 6lm poignantly portrays the link between yesterday's history and tomorrow's future. A new generation is actively seeking to better understand their current role within the story.

They endeavor to do so by reaching back in time to humbly learn what they can from the ancient sword- masters. cWith the rediscovery of many European self-defense manuals, d states McNicoll, cnow is the time for Reclaiming the Blade to shed new light upon the subject. This 6lm is dedicated to the modern practitioners and academics who seek to preserve the ancient traditions." cWith the rediscovery of many European self- defense manuals, now is the time for Reclaiming the Blade to shed new light upon the subject.

This film is dedicated to the modern practitioners and academics who seek to preserve the ancient traditions. d 3Daniel McNicoll \x7 T he originality of the idea and the discovery of new things, seems paramount to me when considering new projects. Storytelling and exploration led me to Re- claiming the Blade . The research process can be very excit- ing, and the 6lm gave me the wonderful opportunity to learn more about a subject I was already interested in.

About three years ago I was led back to the history shelves in search of a different kind of historical epic involving a number of famous battles scenes. I needed to learn as much as I could of Eu- ropean warfare from that period and speci6cally more about historical swordplay. I was surprised by the density of infor- mation available and the recent resurgence of interest in the subject.

Today there are a multitude of ancient texts being studied and translated. Ultimately, I found a very large number of students and academics engaged in the process of redis- covering what they called Historical European Martial Arts. I was intrigued that there were so many groups already busy with the research and study of these ancient arms.

A new and original story based on their work and enthusiasm soon followed. The true symbolic power of the sword is very compelling and the wonder of this long-forgotten martial art was evident to me upon a closer viewing. What I found was a simple yet beautiful art form in serious ne- glect, and to my joy many came for- ward to offer their support.

As I made contact with the students, academics and Hollywood performers, I soon re- alized that I had hit upon something very special. It was almost as if I had released a pressure valve and sud- denly I was standing amidst a 7ood gate of passionate storytellers. Those I spoke with were excited to be a part of this project and happy to bring their story to the forefront.

In truth, much of what we set out to uncover had been lost in time for hundreds of years. The vast in7uence of the sword on mod - ern society is evident. The popularity of the sword and European martial arts has reached new heights and the timing for this 6lm just seems right.

Articles such as the USA Today's "Martial Arts Take a Western Turn" proved what I had been so fortunate to witness 6rsthand. The intriguing subject of historical swordplay was experiencing a real renaissance. Taking the time to explore these things was the better part of working on Reclaiming the Blade .

While working on the 6lm various groups got involved, from the Illustrious Royal Armou- ries in Great Britain to world renowned special effects studio, Weta Workshop. In addition to individual academics and martial artists who joined with us in bringing the sword to life, so also acclaimed 6ght choreographer Bob An - derson got on board. Bob trained everyone from Erol Flynn to Johnny Depp and was eager to bring his own magic to the 6lm.

In the end though, one of the greatest friendships forged was with Producer Erica Black. Without her ambitious spirit it would have been impossible to fully realize the dream of the 6lm. She is a wonderful producer and to my delight she was one of the 6rst to really believe in the project.

Reclaiming the Blade delivers unique insights into both historical combat and theatrical swordplay. This movie is for the child within all of us, for all those who love adventure mixed with a dash of history. Swords and swordplay continue to dominate our stories.

From the new Indiana Jones 6lm to Matthew McConaughey's Fools Gold , from Nim's Island to A Bee Movie , The Chronicles of Narnia and The Lord of the Rings , these entertaining 6lms continue to acknowledge our love for the blade. I feel honored to have played a small part in the grand legacy of the sword. c The true symbolic power of the sword is very compelling and the wonder of this long- forgotten martial art was evident to me upon a closer viewing.

What I found was a simple yet beautiful art form in serious neglect, and to my joy many came forward to offer their support. d \x8 E Daniel McNicoll 3 Writer/Director Experience in the music industry has given Daniel McNicoll a unique perspec- tive as a director, enabling him to explore the convergence of music and 6lm. In New York City as a solo artist he was accepted into the CMJ Music Marathon two straight years.

As a screenwriter, he has equally proven his talents. The LA-based Script- Shark has described his writing as both coriginal and engag- ing with strong market value. d While 6nding inspiration during the 6lmmaking and writing process, McNicoll has discovered the true advantage of allowing music to help tell the story. E Erica Black 3 Producer/Director of Photography A passion for images began early for Erica Black.

She pursued a degree in photography, specializing in hand-pro- cessed black and white images at The University of the South, Sewanee, but soon was drawn into the exciting world of collaborative 6lm making. Working as a set production assistant on several Hol- lywood movies and network TV shows, she quickly realized that she was largely drawn to the camera department. Black received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film Production from UC-Boulder.

She later completed a Masters Degree in Graphic Communications from Clemson University. Having originally learned cinematography on super-8 and Bolex 16mm cameras, Black was able to quickly make the the transition to HD and miniDV for Reclaiming the Blade . As the 6lm's Director of Photography, Black managed an internation - al project that often times included multiple cinematographers and camera crews from around the globe.

E David James Nielsen 3 Composer David James Nielsen was born in Calgary, AB, Canada and entered the musical world playing piano starting at age six. He began composing at age 15 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts Degree in music from the University of Calgary. From 1997 to 2003, Nielsen served as Composer-In-Residence for Pleiades Theatre/Vertigo Mystery The- atre, and composed the musical scores for approximately twenty-eight theatrical plays.

In 2003, he earned a certi6cate in Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television from the University of Southern California, where he was honored with the Harry Warren Scholarship Award. Nielsen has scored or provided music for several 6lms in - cluding Reclaiming the Blade , Haunting Villisca , Tales from Be- yond , Man Vs. Woman , and many others.

In January of 2008, he won the Gold Medal of Artistic Excellence Award for his score to the 6lm Man Vs. Woman , and the Bronze Medal for Excellence Award for his score to the 6lm Tales from Beyond at the Park City Film Music Festival. He also has worked in a variety of roles ranging from additional music composer, or- chestrator and synthesizer programmer on various television series and movies including, Star Trek Enterprise , The Tenth Circle , Flight 93 , Faith of My Fathers , and the 2008 National Geographic Special Eden at the End of the World.

E Tim Goodwin - Editor Tim Goodwin loves being an editor. He likens it to playing bass in a band; though under the radar, he is creatively and es- sentially participating in crafting some- thing brand new, on every project. Good- win thrives on the challenge of conducting picture, story, sound design, rhythm, per- formance, and message simultaneously.

His goal is to guide a story, as cleanly, and as creatively as possible, whether it be in two hours, or two minutes. Goodwin holds credits on feature-length narratives and documentaries, and has a broadcast client list that includes ESPN, HBO, Nick- elodeon, The CW Network, ABC Sports, and Condé Nast. \x9 E John Rhys-Davies John Rhys-Davies 9 proli6c 6lm credits include two of the most popular trilogies ever made- Indiana Jones and The Lord of the Rings .

For his role as cGimli d in The Return of the King , Rhys-Davies and the rest of the principal cast won Outstanding Performance by a cast in a Motion Picture by the Screen Actors Guild. The acclaimed Welsh actor credits his early exposure to classic literature for his decision to pursue acting and writing. He began acting in Shakespeare plays at the age of thirteen at Truro School in Cornwall.

By the time he graduated from the University of East Anglia, where he founded the University Dramatic So- ciety and starred at the celebrated Maddermarket Theatre, he had already created an impressive amateur resume. Upon graduating from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), he then worked in repertory theatres throughout Britain and at the Royal Shakespeare Company. As for television, he was nominated for an Emmy for his performance as cRodrigues d in Shogun .

He starred in the hit television series Sliders as cProfessor Maximillian Arturo d, and has also had leading roles in Victor/Victoria , The Living Day- lights , and King Solomon 9s Mine . Rhys-Davies has a host of theater roles to his credit, in- cluding "The Misanthrope", "Hedda Gabler" and most of Shakespeare's works.
