SIXTH FRAMEWORK PROGRAMME Background The main objective of 8Bioenergy in Motion 9 is to increase the deployment of new and innovative biomass heating and cooling technologies and systems in the EU. In recent years EU policies to encourage the wider deployment of renewable electricity generation, transport biofuels and energy efficiency have over-shadowed policies aimed at the deployment of renewable ... more. less.

energy heating and cooling (REHC).

Yet heating and cooling demands by the industrial, commercial and domestic sectors constitute about 1/2 of the total EU final energy consumption. REHC technologies make use of solar, biomass and geothermal sources. Biomass sources contribute more than 90% of REHC.

New and innovative techniques for biomass heating and cooling are available that are environmentally safe and make biomass increasingly easy to handle. Uptake of REHC technologies is lagging, however, which is a main factor of the EU 9s under-performance on the way to its 12% renewable energy target for 2010. The movie: 8Bioenergy in Motion 9 To help overcome the barriers to their wider deployment, a movie will be made showcasing successful bioenergy technologies and flagship projects completed in recent years.

The movie will show various small- and medium-scale applications and will illustrate the merits and possibilities of different bioenergy technologies. It will address the practical potential and possi- bilities, investment opportunities, and the policy context of these bioenergy systems. Three country-tailored versions of the movie will be made, covering Bulgaria, Estonia and the Czech Republic respectively.

The core of the movie will consist of national and international bioenergy projects, interviews with key stake- holders, and information on national and EU policy targets and instruments. BIOENERGY in Motion Target Groups The movie aims at familiarising opinion makers with the niches in the heating and cooling markets where renewable energy sources can be successfully introduced or their share can be expanded. Target groups include: > Potential end-users of bioenergy technologies (households, industrial sector, institutional sector).

These will be shown possibilities of using biomass for generating heating or cooling. > Investors and financial institutions, which can be informed on viable opportunities to invest in bioenergy projects. > National and local governments.

These will be informed on the contribution that biomass REHC can make towards meeting policy targets. Biomass heating and cooling technologies Applications of specific interest are heating or cooling in: > Individual households and large buildings > Block heating and district heating systems > Industries In all chains, the production of heat may be combined with that of electricity (cogeneration), and/or cooling. Various types of biomass can be used as fuel.

Dissemination The movie will be distributed on DVD among end-users, investors and government authori- ties. A number of showings at (inter)national events will be organised. It will also be made available on the internet where it can be watched on-line in different languages.

DVD copies of the movie can be ordered using the order form on the website. The movie will be available in the languages of the target countries (Bulgarian, Estonian, Czech) and in English. Each movie will have subtitles in various languages.

Expected release date of the movie is June 2008. BIOENERGY in Motion
