MSU Extension Professional Development Portfolio Creating Your Own Professional Development Plan Step 1 - Self Assessment The first step in the development of a viable professional development plan is the assessment of your knowledge and skills. This can be done using informal methods (reflection, discussion with colleagues, interaction with your supervisor, etc.) or by using a variety of more formal self- assessment inventories (The Core Competency Self-Assessment Inventory, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Kolb Learning Style Inventory, True Colors, for example). Professional development resources may include such things as workshops, expert colleagues who are willing to share their ideas, books, audio tapes, professional journals, conferences, and so many other ideas. It is important to be continually on the lookout for professional development resources that can effectively respond to the self-assessment that you are conducting in Step 1 of your Professional Development Plan.<br><br> Your county extension director and your MSUE assigned mentor can help to identify local resources to assist in your professional development. Step 3 - Development of Plan Now that you have assessed your own professional abilities (Step 1) and identified appropriate professional development resources (Step 2) it is time to prepare a Professional Development Plan.<br><br> Your Professional Development Plan attempts to organize Step 1 and Step 2 so that you can systematically work on your further professional development. The following components make up a Professional Development Plan: I. Areas of focus (from Step 1) The skills/content you want to focus on II.<br><br> Professional Development Activities (from Step 2) The methods you will use to improve yourself III. Time Frame When will you begin/end each activity? IV.<br><br> Follow-up/Continuation How you will continue development of this skill in the future Use the worksheets in this folder to help in drafting your professional development plan. Once drafted, share your professional development plan with your CED. Step 4 3 Evidence of Professional Achievement Use this folder, and the other folders that follow in your Professional Development Portfolio, to collect evidences of your achievement of your professional development plan and the further development of your competence as an extension educator.<br><br> Periodically share these materials with your CED so he/she can assist you in continuing your professional development.
