S.H.A.R.E., Inc. 2009-2010 Enrichment Class Descriptions Classes are arranged alphabetically under each age category (5-8yr), (9-12yr), (13+) and (open to any age). If a class has an exception to the age of the student it will be listed next to the class name.
For Class times and teachers please refer to the 2009- 2010 Enrichment Class Schedule. 5-8 year old classes ART The kids will do a variety of crafts and projects. They must have scissors, glue sticks, glue, crayons, color pencils, and markers.
There will be times when we will ask for recyclable items for craft projects. ASTRONOMY (note ages 7-9) - Textbook - Exploring Creation with Astronomy by Jeannie K. Fulbight.
Kids will work through the book while completing lapbooks. BAKING CLAY (note ages 7-10) -Art work using polymer baking clay. I will present ideas but they are free to be creative and make their own things as they choose.
They need their own polymer clay to start 2-4 packs in colors your student prefers. A rubbermaid type of container to store clay in and a few toothpicks. COOKING The children will be learning various recipes and how to use kitchen supplies.

ROW The teacher will read to the kids and do other activities with them. They will need basic supplies like, crayons, scissors, glue and pencils.<br><br> GYM We will learn basic physical fitness and sports skills by playing games and other activities; learning to work as a team and an individual. HOME EC (note ages 7-10)The students will learn basic sewing, tables setting, simple recipes, and basic home keeping skills. HUMAN BODY This class will utilize hands-on activities and science experiments to learn about the God designed machine that is our human body.<br><br> Students will complete a lapbook as part of this course. Storybooks, crafts, puzzles, games and lots of experiment will be a part of our class time. LEGO 3 Kids will use lego and learn.<br><br> LET 9S JUST HAVE FUN In this class kids will do a variety of different things, math, art, science, unit studies. It will be all fun, fun, fun. I will be doing mini Unit Studies each month that incorporate FUN books, FUN recipes, FUN art projects, FUN games, FUN scripture yes, JESUS is fun!) and fun times for 5-8 year olds to learn in a relaxed, happy environment, without even knowing they are learning!<br><br> September will begin with: A peck of FUN with apples! October will be Fun with Community Helpers! November/December Holiday Fun!<br><br> LOGIC In this class the students will use their mighty minds to figure out puzzles, games, and facts. They will do this by doing activity sheets, games, puzzles and many other things. READ ACROSS AMERICA: A STORYBOOK GEOGRAPHY CLASS Each session will begin with the reading of a picture book that takes place in a different state.<br><br> W e 9ll start with Maine and end with Hawaii, covering only about half of our 50 states. The rest of our class time will be spent in hands-on learning activities focusing on the cstate of the week d. We will learn about people, geography, climate, weather, foo ds, agriculture, plants, major cities and tourist attractions 3 unique to each state.<br><br> We will NOT be memorizing abbreviation, dates or state capitals. A class project will be to collect the 50 state quarters. Each student will make a booklet of rubbings of the quarters.<br><br> The booklet will also include stickers, drawings, maps, etc. related to the states that we study. We 9ll also play games, do crafts, hear songs and maybe even make recipes related to the state of the week.<br><br> 9-12 year old classes AMERICAN GIRL (Note ages 8-12) students must be able to read small chapter books. The students will learn about American history through the eyes of the American Girls we are studying. Each American Girls Doll has a study guide and web site that we will be reviewing during class.<br><br> We will have fun making crafts, bringing in related costumes, historical items, food from the time era and American Girls Dolls. The class will not require any additional fee, unless we are able to incorporate a field trip to Kalamazoo Children's Museum. Homework opportunities will be offered, but not required.<br><br> The class requires no books or American Girls Dolls on the part of the students. I will be following the book, Creating Books With Children by Valerie Bendt. I attended a workshop of hers, created books with my children as well as teaching this class several years ago at Enrichment Day.<br><br> Supplies that will be needed for each child will be a 12 dx18 d sketch pad, a 9 dx12 d sketch pad (It i s best to make sure these are the same brand to ensure uniformity), construction paper, glue stick, markers, pencils water colors or whatever they would like to use to illustrate their book and a notebook to write their story in. The notebook will be needed at the beginning of Enrichment classes. I will notify through a note the weeks that the other supplies will be needed.<br><br> I will provide everything else to complete the book. Most of the work can be done during the class but there may be a time when the writing of the story might need to be done at home. ELMENTRY MUSIC (Note 4 thru 6 grade ages 9 to 12) Students will be learning folks songs, patriotic songs, camp songs ,holiday songs and basic music skills .<br><br> Each month we will be making a musical instrument. Possible performances. EXPLORING MIDDLE EARTH (Note ages 12+)(The Hobbit and LOTR trilogy) In this class we will be reading all four books in order.<br><br> That means that we will be reading thru a book about every 7.5 weeks. The study guides we will be using are from Progeny Press, a very well written and Christian based company. Each student will need to purchase or borrow a copy of each book.<br><br> They are as follows: #1 the Hobbit, #2 The Fellowship of the Ring, #3 The Two Towers, and #4 The Return of the King. I will provide copies of the study guides to each student. Students need to read assigned chapters, answer the study guide questions, and be ready to discuss these in class.<br><br> Each week the student is required to bring a Bible, the current book, their completed study guides, and a pencil to class. For the first class students will need to have read the first three chapters of the Hobbit. This is an English credit course.<br><br> FLYING CREATURES Curriculum: Considering God 9s Creation with Zoololgogy 1: Flying Creatures of the fifth Day (by Jeannie Fulbright) Part of Apologia Science 9s Young Explorer Series. Order from: Rainbow Resource Catalog (www.rainbowresource.com), Apologia.com Beginning with the nature of zoology, classification of animals and the dynamics of flight, the course then goes on to discuss the wonderful world of birds, bats, prehistoric flying reptiles and then ends with insect characteristics and lifestyles. The student notebook is emphasized in every lesson.<br><br> Note booking will be started in class and completed independently at home. Each family according to their own needs and schedules will determine the extent of at-home note booking. There will be a variety of hands on activities and or experiments each week to complement the lesson.<br><br> We usually take 2 weeks to complete each chapter. Homework will average 30 -60 minutes each week (which includes reading the chapter) This course will require students to read the chapter at home before coming to co-op class. There will also be an on going cnature Journal d project that will require independent work at home.<br><br> Things needed are: Text, 1 - 1/2 inch or 2 inch 3 ring binder, composition book, north American bird field guide, colored pencils, pencils, scissors. GIRLS GYM (Note ages 12+) This will be an opportunity for girls ages 12 and older to get some exercise, play some competitive games and work on both team building and individual skills. Each session will open with a time of warm up followed by a variety of gym games.<br><br> Gym shoes with a non floor marking sole are necessary...No sandals or flip flops. INTRO TO PUBLIC SPEAKING (Notes Ages 11-15) Prerequisite: must be able to read well Description: This is a fun class where students will learn to become comfortable speaking aloud in a group setting. This is not a speech writing class.<br><br> This class will focus on the mechanics of speech delivery. From reading aloud sitting in their chairs to standing before the group delivering a speech, students will slowly and methodically move towards a comfort level of speaking aloud in front of a group. As students are expected to take a formal speech class in high school, this class is a fun, less daunting preparation for that.<br><br> Students will learn about posture and other non-verbal language, enunciation and emphasis, eye-contact and more. Fun, light, non-threatening class. KEEPERS AT HOME Keepers at Home is a hands on program designed to teach girls skills to encourage their spiritual growth, their home making, and creative skills.<br><br> The Keepers At Home book is required for this class but two students from the same family can share one book. It is available from their website www.keepersofthefaith.com This class will require some minor purchases and also has a class fee. LITERATURE (Note ages10-12) Class description: Using different types of literature guides and studies we will explore the world of good books!<br><br> Class will read together, be assigned reading for at home and enjoy different activities to bring our reading to life! Activities will include; drama, art, cooking, games, writing and fun! as we dig into these different stories and make our reading an adventure!<br><br> Supplies needed: General supplies (crayons, scissors, markers, glue, pencil etc.) LITERATURE (Note ages 12-15) Goal is to introduce the students to wide variety of good literature and encourage a love for reading. Homework for class will be plenty of reading and some light vocab work. We will be teaching with a Charlotte Mason Philosophy - we 9ll keep it simple.<br><br> During class time we will discuss what we read, do read aloud, narrate, introduce Shakespear through Charles and Mary Lamb 9s book and movies, introduce some poetry. SIGN LANGUAGE (Note 3rd to 6th grade) Basic signing, learning songs, playing games, book to be determined STAGE CRAFT/ DRAMATIC STUDIES (Note ages 12+) The main focus of this class is to learn theater terms and procedures and how to plan an event some skits or music may be performed. THEATER PLAY (Note ages 8-12) To learn to follow directions, project your voice, cooperate with others, learn theater and stage terms.<br><br> WOODWORKING The following tools are REQUIRED: if the cost of tools create a financial hardship, please talk to me and I will make sure you child has tools to use. Miter box and saw, hand saw, safety glasses, coping saw and replacement blades, hammer, tape measure. Students will learn to use hand tools properly and safely.<br><br> They will measure, cut, sand and finish different wood projects throughout the semester. 13+ year old classes ALGEBRA 1 (Note ages 14+) Book: Math-U-See Algebra 1 (student and teacher set) www.mathusee.com. credit: 1 math credit Pre-requisites: Have good command of basic math functions.<br><br> Meeting once a week does not allow time for remedial work. ART HISTORY (Note ages 14+) ART (Note ages 14+) CITIES OF OUR WORLD Learn strange and interesting facts about cities all over the world. You will learn some geography, some culture, some history and some weird but true things about some cities you may of never heard of.<br><br> You will need a 3 ring binder and pencil. Please be aware that the cases to be solved will consist of kidnaping, murder, theft and a drug bust. Limit of 12.<br><br> DRIVE THRU HISTORY (Note ages 14+) This Social Studies class is based on the amazing video series produced by Focus on the Family, Drive Thru History. Our Adventure in Class will include watching segments of the Ancient History videos, discussing the main ideas and themes together, and completing additional map work and research at home (essays, presentation, projects, maybe even some debate..) Requirement: students must be able to write essays, share their thoughts aloud in front of the class, and accept peer and teacher feedback. Essays must be typed; Internet access is highly recommended.<br><br> Course materials: students will need a large 3-ring notebook, pens, colored pencils, loose leaf notebook paper, 5 dividers for the notebook. FINANCIAL PEACE (Note ages 14+) How to get out of debt and /or stay out of debt. Credit cards, college financing, buying a house, investing and compound interest are just a few things covered in the DVD 9s by Dave Ramsey.<br><br> Students will need the Text book Financial Peace for teens. GEOMETRY (Note 15+) Book Math-U-See Geometry (student and teacher set) www.mathusee.com Credit: 1 math credit. Pre-requisites: Algebra 1 GENERAL SCIENCE (Note 7 th and 8 th grade, ages 12 thru 14) Overview of the class: Class will focus on labs and supplemental materials to enhance the text book by Apologia Ministries that is designed specifically for independent study.<br><br> Topics will include the history of science, the scientific method, simple machines, geology, paleontology, and human anatomy. This course is a serious start to the study of science and students should be prepared to meet the expectations of homework required for this class. One of the goals for this class is to prepare students and ease their transition into high school level science courses.<br><br> Students will be required to read each assigned chapter independently at home before coming to co-op class to be prepared for labs, write complete answers in their lab book to the ten cOn Your Own d questions for each chapter, demonstrate evidence of vocabulary comprehension, actively participate in experiments, and complete formal written lab reports. We will usually take 2 weeks to complete each chapter. A few short quizzes will be administered throughout the year to help hold the students accountable to major scientific concepts.<br><br> Tests will not be administered in class, but parents can administer tests at home if they purchase them from the publisher and so desire. Completing the chapter study guides in the text will help students be successful with testing. Homework: Homework will average 2-3 hours each week, depending on reading speed, reading comprehension, familiarity with vocabulary, and confidence gained with scientific principles.<br><br> Curriculum: Exploring Creation with General Science, 2nd Edition (by Dr. Jay Wile) GIRLS GYM This will be an opportunity for girls ages 12 and older to get some exercise, play some competitive games and work on both team building and individual skills. Key world figures throughout history will be studied in conjunction with the class timeline. Students will learn how all this information applies to them today.<br><br> Magazine articles and websites will be assigned to keep students informed on the world around them and how they can make an impact on things that will affect them. The ultimate goal will be to involve students in some sort of civic volunteerism - maybe becoming involved in a candidate's campaign and doing some hands- on work. Guest speakers and videos will add to class teaching.<br><br> Be prepared for some lively discussion! Could count as a Government/Civics credit with student research. MIDDLE AGES 2 This is a further study into the daily lives, inventions, art, music, and culture of the middle ages.<br><br> In this class we will learn even more about the time of castles, Robin Hood, pirates, Leonardo DaVinci, medieval musicians and the holy crusades. We will be making hands on projects, watching period films, tasting period foods, meeting medieval people and winding it all up with a big year end feast! Students will need to bring a pencil every week.<br><br> Colored pencils, markers, scissors and glue sticks are also helpful. This is an enrichment class that can be counted as a history credit with a little extra work. TRAVLING TROUGH THE LAND OF NARNIA In this class we will be reading all seven books of the Narnia series.<br><br> That means we will be finishing a book about every 4 weeks. We will once again be using the wonderful study guides from Progeny Press. Only 3 study guides are available for this series currently.<br><br> For the other four books we will be holding a round table discussion. Students will need to purchase or borrow each of the seven books. Titles are as follows: #1 The Magicians Nephew, #2 the Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe, #3 The Horse and His Boy, #4 Prince Caspian, #5 The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, #6 The Silver Chair, and #7 The Last Battle.<br><br> Each week students will need to bring a Bible, a copy of the current book, completed study guide, and a pencil. For the first class students will need to have read the first three chapters of The Magicians Nephew. This is an English credit course.<br><br> PERSONAL AWARENESS AND SELF DEFENSE(one class boys - one class girls) (Note 12+) (This is Jared Fulton an outside teacher) Objective: to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to enhance one 9s personal safety at home and in public through awareness and avoidance by identifying potential threats and using physical defense techniques and posturing with an emphasis on conflict resolution. This is an instructional course as well as a hands on physically active class. Some instruction and demonstrations will require that students have physical contact with the instructor and/or other students for proper development of self-defense techniques.<br><br> This course will emphasize personal awareness and application of personal safe-guards. The self-defense techniques will be physical and have foundations in the martial arts. Cost: $5.00 per week per student or may paid in full in advance of class PHYSICAL SCIENCE Book - Apologia Exploring Creation with Physical Science.<br><br> The students will work through the book completing experiments. There will be required reading and assignments. PRACTICAL PHYSICS (Note ages 15+) Required text: Exploring the World of Physics by John Hudson Tiner available through www.libraryanded.com.<br><br> Other texts will be used for experiments and concepts, but will not be necessary for students to purchase. We will be learning basic concepts and having a lot of fun with hands on demos and a class project or two. This class will not have the same intensity of the Apologia curriculum, but will have enough meat in it to count for a Physics credit.<br><br> Some outside research will be necessary to execute some non-threatening oral class presentations and demonstrations by the students. The goal of this class is to learn basic physics principles while apply them to every day life, fully curiosity about how things work and having fun. PRAISE TEAM BEGINNER This is a class to encourage youth who would like to contemplate being part of a praise team.<br><br> If you are interested in learning a new and easy way of playing the guitar; if you want to experience playing the drums for the first time, maybe you just want to see if you have the talent or gift in the area, this class is for you. PRAISE TEAM ADVANCED This class is for those already playing or that took praise team last year. If you are not sure if you are ready for this class you must see Mr.<br><br> Woodman first. STAGE CRAFT/ DRAMATIC STUDIES (Note ages 12+) The main focus of this class is to learn theater terms and procedures and how to plan an event some skits or music may be performed. SIGN LANGUAGE 3 (Note ages 14+) Must have had class 1 - 2 .<br><br> In the 3rd class we will be working on communication Phases , conversational sign language. Learning to sign sentences . Sign to songs , Possibility working with the hearing impaired children and guest speakers sign with the deaf culture , Field trips in community to use in everyday situations .<br><br> Book to be determined TEAM SPORTS They will play team sports like basketball, soccer, hockey, and games that will teach team spirit and effort. WEB PAGE DESIGN This class is designed as a fun way for your child to learn about web page design. Homework will only be as tough as you make it.<br><br> For Parents: web Page design is another avenue to get your cI don 9t like to write d child to spew out pages of info - have them sign up for this class, maybe those essay 9s will be easier to get out of them. YEARBOOK Laptops are preferred, but if you are willing to work on a home computer that is okay too.<br><br> Each yearbook member will be responsible for completing 10 pages (maybe less depending on how many people participate but anticipate doing 10) Each year book member will be responsible for taking pictures throughout the day at Share, and at other activities, (field trips, sports, etc.) You do not need to own a digital camera, you can use mine.
