2/2/2010 1 7th GRADE 7th GRADE 7th GRADE 7th GRADE &REQUIRED CLASSES& &REQUIRED CLASSES& &REQUIRED CLASSES& &REQUIRED CLASSES& ART FOUNDATIONS 1 ART FOUNDATIONS 1 ART FOUNDATIONS 1 ART FOUNDATIONS 1 (Semester) (Fee) Art Foundations 1 is recommended for all 7 th grade students and any 8 th grade students who have not successfully completed the class. This class is a prerequisite for 2-D or 3-D Art for 8 th graders. It will include an introduction to drawing, painting, and some ceramics.

Students will create two and three-dimensional artwork using line, shape, color, texture, value etc. Some projects will include: designing African masks and texture medallions using clay; African shields using tempera paints; jungle scenes using colored pencils; and creepy crawlies using crayon and watercolors. CAREERS TECHNICAL EDUCATION (CTE) (Year) CTE is a high-tech exploratory experience for every 7 th grade student.

Students are given experience in and exposure to concepts, technology, and career information connected with business and industry as well as home living skills. The experiences are presented in four cluster areas: 1) Business/Marketing/Computers; 2) Family and Consumer Sciences; 3) Technology/Problem Solving; 4) Careers and Health Sciences. Each of the components includes a corresponding guidance module.

ENGLISH 7 (Year) This course will focus on effective strategies for reading and writing. The concepts covered are vocabulary development, reading and writing techniques for informative and literary texts, and inquiry. Outside reading is required.<br><br> ENGLISH/HISTORY ACADEMY ENGLISH/HISTORY ACADEMY ENGLISH/HISTORY ACADEMY ENGLISH/HISTORY ACADEMY (Year) Prior approval is required based on district testing. The English and History Academy classes are project-oriented, integrated studies classes with students exposed to a complex and substantive content. The enriched curriculum will emphasize creativity and higher level thought processes.<br><br> The English Academy is a full year, while Utah History Academy is one semester. KEYBOARDING 1 KEYBOARDING 1 KEYBOARDING 1 KEYBOARDING 1 (Semester) This course is required for 9 th grade Computer Technology Course. In this introductory course, students learn basic word processing and keyboarding skills.<br><br> These invaluable skills include editing and proofreading documents, performing standard file management procedures, keyboarding, and creating applicable business documents to simulate a real-life job environment. MATH 7 MATH 7 MATH 7 MATH 7 (Year) This course is designed for students who are not ready for Pre- Algebra. Students will learn basic math concepts that will include how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide integers, fractions, and decimals.<br><br> Students will also learn about ratios, proportions, percents, and basic geometry. MUSIC MUSIC MUSIC MUSIC (depends on the class chosen) All 7 th Grade students are required to have a music experience. This can be satisfied with General Music, Chorus-Mix 7, Band, Orchestra or Percussion.<br><br> PE 7/8 PE 7/8 PE 7/8 PE 7/8 (Semester) (Towel & Locker Fee) Students in 7 th grade will participate in a variety of instructional physical activities. The major objectives of physical education are to promote and develop physical fitness and to teach the fundamental skills in team sports and activities. Emphasis is placed on increasing the knowledge affecting attitudes, sportsmanship, and behavior related to physical activity including exercise, sports and small games.<br><br> Students will be introduced to basic fundamentals, regulations, rules and game play. Class content will be varied and include activities such as cooperative activities, new games, outdoor activities, fitness activities, or sports. Instruction includes an introduction to training principles and activities that enhance health-related fitness as students pursue personal fitness goals.<br><br> Approved PE clothing and shoes must be worn. PRE PRE PRE PRE- -- -ALGEBRA ALGEBRA ALGEBRA ALGEBRA (Year) Pre-Algebra is the recommended course for 7th grade students. This course will focus on ratios and proportions; relationships between percents, fractions, and decimals; operations of integers; introduction to variables, equations, tables, and graphs; recognizing linear relations; similarity; and solving one and step two equations.<br><br> For those students who struggle in math an additional supplementary math course will be offered, they will have math every day. This will eliminate one full year of an elective course from their schedule. The criteria for entrance into this additional course will be end of year core testing and teacher recommendation.<br><br> SCIENCE 7 SCIENCE 7 SCIENCE 7 SCIENCE 7 (Year) A full year course that focuses on the theme of cstructure d as a property that is common to all sciences. Students observe that all substances are made of smaller parts and are themselves parts of a larger whole, and that when parts come together the whole often has properties that are very different from its parts. Hands-on, inquire-based instruction is used to help students value science as a process for obtaining knowledge based on observable evidence.<br><br> UTAH HISTORY UTAH HISTORY UTAH HISTORY UTAH HISTORY (Semester) This course is an overview of the significant events, people, diverse culture, and issues that have influenced the development of Utah. Individual style and craftsmanship will be emphasized. Potential projects include: mobiles, collage, printmaking, painting, and several different kinds of sculpture.<br><br> BAND BEGINNING BAND BEGINNING BAND BEGINNING BAND BEGINNING (Year) (Fee) Students in beginning band are equipped with the basics of individual and ensemble playing skills, playing position, characteristic tone production, fundamental technique, rhythmic accuracy, and interpretation of music symbols. Most instruments are available for rent from local music stores. Instruments such as Tubas, Euphoniums, or French Horns, Bass Clarinets, Oboes, Bassoons, and large Saxophones can be rented from TMS for a $70.00 annual fee.<br><br> SUMMER BAND MUST BE ATTENDED for specific instruction on their instrument, it will be held in June. This class is an intermediate dance course that continues to build upon the foundational concepts of dance fundamentals: space, time and energy. An increased emphasis is placed on proper dance technique, strength, flexibility, and stamina.<br><br> Students will also be challenged more fully in the areas of improvisation and composition. This class will culminate with a performance in a dance concert at the end of the semester. Students will give a series of speeches and are introduced to a variety of acting and drama activities. (Grammatical structure of the language is taught so students whose English grades are lower than a C and who struggle with English grammar may want to consider postponing a foreign language until 9th Grade.) 2/2/2010 3 INTRO TO TECHNOLOGY INTRO TO TECHNOLOGY INTRO TO TECHNOLOGY INTRO TO TECHNOLOGY (Semester) This course is a modular instruction program and will give students an opportunity to work in some areas of high and low technology at an exploratory level. The students will have many modules to pick from and will choose three for each term based on their interests.<br><br> A few of the modules are, but not limited to the areas of: 1) Claymation 2) CO 2 Cars 3) Robotics 4) Beginning Electronics. KEYBOARDING APS KEYBOARDING APS KEYBOARDING APS KEYBOARDING APS ( Semester) Pre-Requisite: Word Processing Basic. This course builds upon the knowledge and skills acquired in word processing 1.<br><br> Students will learn the advanced features of word processing software. They will improve productivity by using the most efficient, time saving methods to produce documents. Emphasis will be placed upon the creation and enhancement of business documents.<br><br> MYTHOLOGY MYTHOLOGY MYTHOLOGY MYTHOLOGY (Semester) Mythology will help students learn to appreciate the impact of culture and history on our literature. This class will study, Greek, Roman, Scandinavian, American, Egyptian, and Arthurian myths and folklore. Students will write their own myths.<br><br> ORCHESTRA ORCHESTRA ORCHESTRA ORCHESTRA BEGINNING BEGINNING BEGINNING BEGINNING (Year) This is an entry level class for beginning students on violin, viola, cello, or bass viola. It is open to students of all grades and is preceded by a four-week dsummer strings d session in July to give students specific instruction on their instrument . This school has violas, cellos, and basses for student rental at $70.00 per year.<br><br> Violins can be rented or purchased through local music dealers. This Orchestra performs in a concert at the end of each quarter. ORCHESTRA ORCHESTRA ORCHESTRA ORCHESTRA INTERMEDIATE INTERMEDIATE INTERMEDIATE INTERMEDIATE (Year) This course is offered to students with at least one year experience playing violin, viola, cellos, or bass viola.<br><br> In addition to the quarterly concerts, this orchestra performs for the District Intermediate Orchestra Festival. No audition required if experience criteria is met. PERCUSSION PERCUSSION PERCUSSION PERCUSSION - -- - BEG BEG BEG BEGINNING INNING INNING INNING (Year) AUDITION ONLY!<br><br> MUST HAVE TWO OR MORE YEARS OF PIANO EXPERIENCE AND AUDITION WITH TEACHERS. This class will focus primarily on fundamental mallet and snare techniques. A percussion kit must be rented (or purchased) from a local music store which includes both a practice pad and bell set.<br><br> Class includes basic rudiments, reading rhythms, pitches, and performing on other percussion instruments. Students will perform with the beginning bands at school concerts. This course is for students who are below grade level in reading and comprehension skills. This class will focus mainly on linear relationships specifically, focusing on solving linear equations and inequalities, systems of linear equations and inequalities, generating equivalent expressions, using formulas, and applying proportionality.<br><br> Students will also study exponents, polynomials, and rational numbers. This course will prepare students for Geometry and Intermediate Algebra. GEOMETRY GEOMETRY GEOMETRY GEOMETRY (Year) PRE-REQUISITE 3 ALGEBRA 1.<br><br> This course is designed to help students gain a greater understanding of geometry and working knowledge of geometric figures, triangular relationships, polygons, parallelism, similarity, trigonometry, circles, area, logic and proofs. HEALTH HEALTH HEALTH HEALTH (Semester) The student will continue to recognize, develop and practice positive health life skills and lifestyles and improve physical health and quality of life. Students will understand the stages of growth, development, and maturation that lead to responsible behavior.<br><br> Students will understand factors that lead to high risk lifestyles, including disease prevention and the effects of alcohol abuse. An appreciation for sports in relation to physical well-being is stressed.<br><br> A fitness development program is included in the course. BAND BAND BAND BAND 3 3 3 3 SYMPHONIC SYMPHONIC SYMPHONIC SYMPHONIC (Year) BY AUDITION ONLY!<br><br> This class will build on the concepts learned in beginning/intermediate band. Emphasis will be placed on the following criteria: playing position, characteristic tone production, fundamental technique, rhythmic accuracy, interpretation of music symbols, performance skills, team spirit, and responsible rehearsal habits. This class has a demanding performance schedule.<br><br> JR CHOIR JR CHOIR JR CHOIR JR CHOIR - -- - GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS (Semester) This class will develop music and rhythm reading as well as pitch perception skills. Girls Chorus will sing two and three part music designed for beginning to intermediate students. It will cover a large variety of music styles and will perform at festivals and concerts.<br><br> JR CHOIR JR CHOIR JR CHOIR JR CHOIR 3 3 3 3 BOYS BOYS BOYS BOYS (Semester) TEACHER 9S APPROVAL ONLY! This class is geared to changing voices. Award winning girls choir designed for the advanced girls. Students will sing three and four part music group voice.<br><br> Coaching, and improve rhythm and sight reading skills will be taught. Class is for soprano and alto voices. Course involves singing and performances.<br><br> CLOTHING CLOTHING CLOTHING CLOTHING FACS FACS FACS FACS/INTERIOR DESIGN /INTERIOR DESIGN /INTERIOR DESIGN /INTERIOR DESIGN (Semester) (Fee) This course is designed to introduce 8 th grade students to basic sewing techniques, textiles, clothing construction and includes a unit of interior design. These techniques will be applied to make the following projects: Pin cushion, quillow, pajama pants, fleece hat with matching scarf and mittens, and drawstring bag with pocket. Note: In addition to the registration fee, students will be asked to bring some basic sewing supplies as well.<br><br> CREATIVE WRITING CREATIVE WRITING CREATIVE WRITING CREATIVE WRITING (Semester) This course is for 8 th and 9 th graders and is designed for those students who love to write. It is an opportunity for them to write on topics and in formats they enjoy.
