Monitor Audio 9s cabinet makers hand select uniquely matching sets o1 exotic natural wood veneer in Santos Rosewood or Ebony 1or every pair. The veneers are applied by hand a1ter the cabinet is made to ensure that the grain match is precise and that no joints are visible. A1ter meticulous inspection, no 1ewer than eleven layers o1 clear gloss piano lacquer are applied to enhance the exquisite grain de nition and rich variety o1 colour within each veneer. C# 6ftsm 6 ship 6 d Q& 6lity Ceramic-Coated Aluminium/Magnesium (C-CAM ® ) Since 1972, Monitor Audio 9s near 1anatical commitment to excellence and innovation has received global recognition and acclaim. When we launched our R352MD loudspeaker - the rst model to incorporate a metal dome tweeter - it caused quite a stir. Until that time, most metal domes were single-metal types made 1rom copper or titanium and virtually all sounded unconvincing. The R352 used an aluminium/magnesium alloy dome and sounded signi cantly better and smoother than all o1 its single-metal rivals. This radical design 1ormed the blueprint 1or successive generations o1 our C-CAM metal domes. All the radiating sur1aces o1 the Platinum drivers are 1ormed 1rom C-CAM, a material originally developed by the aerospace industry 1or jet engine components. Its properties are ideal 1or loudspeaker cones: extremely rigid, yet light enough to yield high overall e1 ciency. In manu1acture, aluminium/magnesium alloy undergoes stress-relieving processes to remove sur1ace de1ormation and molecular weakness. Once 1ormed, the alloy cone is subjected to a high temperature anodic coating process, in which a layer o1 pure ceramic alumina is depleted onto its sur1aces to give a completely rigid exterior. Conventional cone materials are liable to fex or twist in operation, producing a signi cant level o1 audible distortion. C-CAM cones have a much higher resistance to bending stress and there1ore exhibit much greater delity. Tech ologies Platinum C-CAM high 1requency ribbon transducer. A pure ribbon tweeter is highly regarded in the world o1 high-end audio as being the best way to reproduce ultra-high 1requencies and provide the most li1elike transient response. While this belie1 is well supported by 1undamental physics, one listen will tell you that this driver is very special indeed. Platinum 9s ribbon tweeter design uses an ultra-thin sandwich o1 C-CAM alloy suspended in a power1ul transverse magnetic eld o1 high energy NeFeB rare earth magnets. The ribbon serves as both voice coil and radiating diaphragm, with every part o1 the ribbon driven directly and simultaneously without energy storage. Having a mass o1 just 18mg, its diaphragm is able to start and stop in an instant, producing a transient response capable o1 de ning the leading edge and natural harmonic resonance o1 complex musical sounds. Speci ed to reach ultra-high 1requencies up to an elusive 100 kHz, Platinum 9s magical ribbon tweeter will reproduce with ease every last nuance and detail 1rom vinyl, CD, DVD-A and SACD, together with the wider bandwidth o1 HD-DVD and Blu-ray. Rigid Diaphragm Technology (RDT ® ) mid-range and bass drivers Bass and mid-range driver cones use RDT, a unique technology developed speci cally by Monitor Audio 9s engineers 1or the Platinum series o1 loudspeakers*. Designed to reduce mass and increase cone sti11ness, RDT applies ultra-thin skins o1 C-CAM to a core o1 honeycomb Nomex ® ** material, creating a structure which is extremely light but incredibly rigid. At only 40¼m thick, the C-CAM skins are hal1 the thickness o1 a human hair, yet when bonded to the hexagonal honeycomb core they 1orm an RDT cone, which is 150 times more rigid than a single layer o1 200¼m C-CAM alloy, but has a 1raction o1 the overall mass. These properties allow the cone to operate as a lightning- 1ast piston 1or a clearer more natural sound. The cone 9s new concave geometry has been re ned by FEA analysis to provide a smooth 1requency response and eradicate break-up. To optimise the per1ormance o1 the RDT cone, Monitor Audio has developed motor systems in which a 1ocused magnetic gap and copper eddy rings work together to produce a higher level o1 linearity and lower distortion than was previously possible. Magnet plates and poles are CNC machined to very precise standards, ensuring consistency. The Platinum mid-range driver utilises an 8under hung 9 voice coil design to 1urther optimise linearity and reduce distortion. High energy NeFeB rare earth magnets are used 1or high e1 ciency, and a large 2 d (50mm) voice coil is speci ed to handle power1ul dynamic impulses. Its RDT cone is driven directly by the voice coil to provide an extremely articulate mid-range response and seamless integration with the other drivers. Platinum 9s bass drivers use long-throw voice coil windings 1or long excursions at high power levels, giving deeper, more controlled and potent bass. The larger 8 d (200mm) drivers employ dual spider arrangements 1or extra stability. Re ned 1or Platinum by Monitor Audio 9s engineers, this type o1 material is used 1or leading-edge automotive design and is ideal 1or acoustic applications where a high degree o1 structural rigidity and vibration damping is required. ARC material is cast to 1orm a Tapered Line Enclosure (TLE) 1or Platinum 9s mid-range drivers. The TLE is designed to prevent the propagation o1 standing waves and modal resonances. HiVe ® II High Velocity refex port Platinum employs a new type o1 port technology, which uses a straight rifed design to accelerate air fow and reduce turbulence. HiVe II technology has the ability to move air in and out o1 the cabinet more quickly than a conventional port, bringing power1ul bass and a superior transient response. TLE (Tapered Line Enclosure) HiVe II (High Velocity refex port) ARC (Anti-Resonance Composite) ARC (Anti-Resonance Composite) Cabinet construction The cabinets are o1 multiple laminations o1 wood veneer in a rigid plywood-type construction shaped to 1orm a one piece shell. Internally, the sides are non-regular, preventing the 1ormation o1 standing waves, which undermine the accuracy o1 the system. Monitor Audio has developed a unique 8pin-hole 9 bracing structure 1or the Platinum series, positioned to provide rigidity and integrity. Cabinet bracing is 1urther enhanced by steel bolts that tie 1ront and back panels to the 8pin-hole 9 brace and are tightened to a speci c torque in order to tune out undesirable resonances. Bitumastic damping material is applied to all internal cabinet walls to produce a heightened level o1 resonance damping. Every last detail WBT* Platinum signature Binding Pots are considered to be o1 the highest quality available. Precision-machined and plated with pure platinum, they o11er a very low contact resistance and the best possible reliability. Featuring accurate ne-pitch adjustment, the terminals are suitable 1or heavy duty cables with spade, 4mm plug or bare wire connections. To provide a secure contact with the foor, adjustable spiked 1eet are used. Machined to the nest tolerances 1rom high-grade alloy and anodised to the most exacting standards, the 1eet accept 8bullet 9 spikes o1 high-tensile steel, chrome-plated to a mirror nish. For hard or solid wood fooring, a non-slip rubber pad is integrated with the 1oot design. * WBT Trademark o1 WBT GMbh, Germany PL100 A compact two-way loudspeaker 1eaturing one 6.5 d (165mm) RDT bass-mid driver and C-CAM ribbon transducer. The PL100 has the superior bass de nition and detailed mid-range response o1 the most accurate studio monitors; and its ability to generate the deepest bass 1requencies will rede ne expectations o1 a small speaker. A rigid cabinet construction, proprietary bracing techniques and advanced damping technologies combine to provide the optimum environment 1or its ultra-low distortion drivers. The PL100 9s C-CAM ribbon tweeter extends way beyond the auditory threshold to reveal the ultra-high harmonic 1requencies that are part o1 the natural spectrum o1 sound. Consistency o1 phase is secured by the lightning-1ast RDT bass driver, which reproduces the power and scale o1 dramatic passages with a breathtaking delity. The PL100 is a wideband speaker capable o1 expressing the entire micro-dynamic texture o1 every per1ormance, drawing a rich, natural radiance 1rom the most demanding o1 music and lm scores. Optional, dedicated foor stands are available, which can be bolted directly to the PL100 cabinet 1or increased stability and per1ormance. The PL100 stand allows 1or an increased level o1 tilt to 1acilitate set up and positioning. PL300 Standing at nearly 1.2m tall, the PL300 is a majestic three-way foor standing loudspeaker comprising two 8 d (200mm) RDT bass drivers, one 4 d (100mm) RDT mid-range driver and a C-CAM high 1requency ribbon transducer. It possesses the ability to generate the power and scale required to ll a larger room with awe-inspiring sound. Jaw-dropping dynamics, combined with supreme agility give the PL300 the power to paint the widest and most luminous o1 sonic pictures. Through the application o1 advanced technologies, the sound is neutral, li1elike and totally re ned. With a range 1rom 28Hz to 100kHz, the PL300 is a true wide bandwidth speaker system which is unrivalled in its class. Between 550Hz and 4kHz, the PL300 9s ultra-light and rigid RDT mid-range driver operates with lightning-1ast precision to provide an utterly lucid transient response, aided by its dedicated, proprietary Tapered Line Enclosure (TLE). Precision cast 1rom ARC material, the TLE provides a very inert chamber, whose shape is designed to prevent the 1ormation o1 standing waves. Rubber isolation materials decouple the chamber 1rom the surrounding cabinet to inhibit the release o1 residual energy. Below the mid-range transducer, the PL300 9s twin RDT bass drivers are engineered 1or long excursions with extremely low signal distortion. Even at high power levels the PL300 will remain 1ree 1rom any signs o1 distortion or 1atigue to deliver a sound o1 immense potency and integrity. Further evidence o1 Platinum 9s no compromise design philosophy is revealed by the 8outboard 9 location o1 the PL300 9s crossover, which is mounted in the cast ARC plinth to eliminate magnetic inter1erence and provide acoustic de-coupling 1rom the speaker itsel1. The ARC plinth also houses the bi-wire WBT terminals and o11ers convenient foor level access. PLC350 PLC350 is a substantial three 3way, 1our driver centre channel speaker with the same driver complement as the PL300. Armed with the drivers and technologies o1 the Platinum series, the PLC350 is able to illuminate 1requencies 1rom 32Hz to 100 kHz - arguably the widest bandwidth o1 any centre speaker available. A purely neutral tonal balance in concert with vanishingly low distortion and cabinet colouration make it per1ect 1or reproducing crystal clear dialogue. Furthermore, given that at least sixty per cent o1 the in1ormation generated by a home theatre system is reproduced by the centre channel speaker, the value o1 having as accomplished a design as the PLC350 in the role cannot be exaggerated. For a seamless transition o1 audio within the 1ront soundstage o1 a Platinum home theatre system, the PLC350 9s tonal character and per1ormance matches per1ectly with that o1 the PL300, to generate a truly immersive, dynamic and enriching multichannel experience. A dedicated two pillar stand 1or the PLC350 is available to provide straight or tilted positioning 1or optimum set up.
