However, it appears that Microsoft's Chief Executive Officer will be the one to introduce Windows 7 officially to the world on October 22nd, 2009. According to invitations sent to journalists by the Redmond company, ground zero will be New York City, via All About Microsoft .

"We also wanted to let you know that you will be receiving an invitation to a Microsoft event in NYC on October 22nd to celebrate the availability and launch of Windows 7. With Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer speaking and exciting new hardware from our partners, we're looking forward to sharing Windows 7 with the world," reads an excerpt from the invitation. The Redmond company is far from offering any sort of information on just what its plans are for the first day of Windows 7 general availability.

NYC and a post-XP Windows release sound familiar it is because chances are that you lived through the Windows Vista launch. Back in 2007, on January 30, Steve Ballmer launched Windows Vista in the New York Best Buy, on 529 5th Ave. (44th St. and 5th Ave.) along with Best Buy CEO Brad Anderson. At that time, there was little consumer excitement about the retail launch of Vista. In fact, the pictures released by Microsoft at that time revealed that both Vista and Ballmer had failed to attract a crowd. Windows Vista went on to perform below expectations throughout the following year, and only with the release of Service Pack 1 in 2008 did Microsoft manage to tone down the criticism.
