The class is determined by the shipping weight divided by the manufacturer 9s advertised horsepower.

Four classes: A/Stock through D/Stock. Both manual and automatic transmission vehi- cles in the same class. 1957 31958 New class: Super Stock (S/S).

All cars with a horsepower-to-weight ratio between 0 3 12.59 compete in S/S. Six total classes between S/S and E/S. 1959 NHRA adds a Stock Eliminator title to National Championships.

1960 One new class added bringing Stock classes to seven: S/S to F/S. Automatic transmission classes added as optional. Any complete engine built by a manufacturer allowed, even if it is NOT optional for a particular model.

cNon-visible d changes allowed, including ignition modifications inside the distributor.Any jet size allowed in carburetor. No open exhausts. Traction devices permitted as a safety feature against rear wheel windup. Only next bigger size tires allowed, but includes use of cheater slicks with a minimum of 1/16 d tread for the first time.

No floor shift conversions allowed. 1961 Super Stock class weight break at 0 3 10.59 lbs./hp. Stock class expanded to eleven classes: S/S to K/S.

Any battery-operated ignition system allowed for first time. Floor shift conversions allowed. Open exhaust bypasses allowed for first time, if full exhaust system is retained.

Scattershields now required on all stick-shift cars between S/S and C/S. June 1961, NHRA creates new class for cars with optional equipment not necessarily available to the general public: Optional Super Stock, O/SS. 1962 Factory Experimental (FX) class created as a follow-on to the late 1961 O/SS class for vehicles with optional equipment not readily available to the general public.

Three FX classes determined by cubic-inch-to-weight ratio: A/FX, 0 3 8.99; B/FX, 9.00 3 12.99; C/FX, 13.00 or more. All stock rules apply except any size tire allowed that will fit in wheel well. Stock Class now must be factory assembly-line produced and showroom sales available.

New class at top of stock: Super Super Stock (SS/S), with class break at 0 - 9.89. S/S class now between 9.90 and 10.59 lbs./hp. Fourteen total classes between SS/S and L/S, with classes specified for automatic transmission cars for the first time.

Automatic classes between SS/SA to G/SA. New rules include raising and/or lowering of front or rear of car limited to a maximum of 2 1/2 inches over stock. Engines can be overbored a maximum of .060 to make an adjustment for wear.

Any heavy-duty clutch or explosion-proof clutch assembly allowed. Open exhaust headers allowed as long as the exhaust collector or outlet is not bigger than the original head pipe diameter.Scattershields are now required on all FX, SS/S, S/S, A/S classes, and on all 283ci Chevrolet engines through C/S. Seat belts now required in all classes.

Any size tire allowed as long it is less than 7 d wide and has 1/16 d tread, and that will fit in the original wheel well opening. Any gears allowed that will fit inside the original transmis- sion housing. 1963 Fifteen classes in Super Stock between S/S and N/S, with automatic class- es between S/SA and I/SA.

S/S and S/SA limits are 0 3 8.69 lbs./hp. Factory Experimental class includes both 1962 and 1963 models with optional equipment not available to the general public. The minimum number of cars built to be classified as stock is set at fifty.

First time there is a limit on cubic inches. NHRA sets it at 427.2 cubic inches maximum displacement. NHRA also sets limits on cylinder over- bore size.

Cylinders can be overbored .060 for 1962 and earlier engines; and .030 for 1963 engines IF the overbore does not exceed the 427.2ci max- imum displacement limit. Other changes include an increase in the size of the header collector open- ing at 3.5 inches. Safety helmets are required in all FX classes and recom- mended in stock class.

Wheel/tire sizes remain the same for stock classes, but FX cars can use any size wheel/tire combination that will fit in the fenderwell. 198S UPER S TOCK A PPENDIX A NHRA R ULESAND C HANGESFOR S/S AND FX 1964 One new class in Stock: AA/Stock and AA/Stock Automatic, with the break being S/S 0 3 6.99 and AA/S from 7.00 3 8.69. This is done to allow some of the older A/S cars to compete against one another and not have to race against the new factory models that would dominate the class.

NHRA moves the small stock sports car classes into stock classes, i.e. C/Sports to H/Sports are now entered in one of the regular stock car classes. For the first time, NHRA limits the Factory Experimental entries to only that year 9s model cars, i.e.

only 1964 cars can enter FX classes. All previous years 9 FX class entries will now run in one of the new Modified Production classes. A new change in FX and S/S classes is the first real breakaway from a stock engine: any flat-tappet camshaft will be allowed in both FX and S/S classes.

1965 One change in FX is a new rule that allows the wheelbase to be relocated a maximum of 2%. Also, FX cars will be able to run ANY type camshaft, including one of the new design roller lifter cams. Other changes include altered fenders and wheelwells in FX classes.

Roll bars are now required in all FX class vehicles. The camshaft rules are again relaxed further in Stock as any flat-tappet camshaft is now allowed in S/S, S/SA, AA/S and AA/SA. Safety helmets are now required in all FX, S/S, and Sports car classes.

NHRA changes the minimum number of units to be classed as stock from fifty to one hundred. At the end of the 1964 model year, NHRA instituted a program of 8factor- ing 9 certain engine horsepower ratings. Factories were rating horsepower low to get around high insurance premiums.

So NHRA began running dyno tests to determine what horsepower a certain engine really was put- ting out. It was this figure, not the manufacturers 9 rated horsepower, that was used to determine a car 9s classification. 1966 Stock classes expanded to twenty-seven between S/S and O/S, and S/SA and J/SA.

Factory Experimental classes and rules remain the same as 1965. The only major rule revision is that any intake manifold, as long as it has the same basic configuration as the stock manifold, can be used on Stock vehicles. This year brought the introduction of the first Experimental Stock classes 4 NHRA finally recognizes cfunny cars d and classifies them as Experimental Stock, with five classes within the XS Division, A/XS to E/XS.

1967 NHRA creates a new division within the rules of Stock Class: Super Stock Division. There are ten classes within S/S 3 SS/A to SS/E and SS/AA to SS/EA. NHRA now has twenty-three classes within Stock 3 A/S to N/S and A/SA to I/SA.

Super Stock division cars use all the same rules as Stock class vehicles with the following exceptions: S/S vehicles can run any type of camshaft and valvetrain; can use any type of intake manifold that is of the same config- uration as the original stock intake; and can run any size wheel/tire com- bination that fits in the wheel well. Stock Class vehicles still limited to a 7 d wide tire having a 1/16 d tread. The NHRA eliminates all Factory Experimental classes from the program.

1968 Super Stock division is expanded to twelve classes, SS/A to SS/F and SS/AA to SS/FA. Stock Class is expanded to thirty-four classes, A/S to U/S and A/SA to N/SA. The engine size rules are modified so that the new Chrysler 440ci engines are allowed to compete.

Only those engines in competition in SS/A and SS/AA are limited to the old 427.2 maximum cubic inch displace- ment. All clutch assemblies in S/S classes must be an explosion proof unit. No stock clutch assemblies are allowed in Super Stock division.

S UPER S TOCK 199 A PPENDIX A Action in S/SA at the 863 Nationals between Bill Shirey and the Golden Commandos #1 Plymouth and Roger Lindamood in the Color Me Gone 863 Plymouth, with Shirey about 2 car lengths in front.
