It replaced the ele0ant 403 in May 1960 and was prod>ced in France >ntil 1975.<br><br> As the world co>ld not 0et eno>0h of this car, its prod>ction r>n was licensed to developin0 co>ntries like Ni0eria and was ch>rned o>t >ntil 1989. Over two million >nits of the 404 were s>pplied not only in sedan, estate and pick>p versions b>t also as a convertible in 1961 and a co>pe in 1962. The 404 be0>n when Pe>0eot entr>sted Italian car desi0n firm Pininfarina with the body-stylin0.<br><br> The res>lt was a French answer to the cfintail d mania in North America and germany. It bore a strikin0 resemblance to another Pininfarina infl>enced car, namely the A>stin Cambrid0e/Morris Oxford of En0land b>t was more refined and stylish. Incidentally, this was the only model in the Pe>0eot ran0e that had its 9 rear li0hts embedded in the finned rear win0s.<br><br> The 404 also sold in 0reat n>mbers worldwide d>e to the famed Pe>0eot en0ineerin0, occ>pant safety and comfort q>alities. In 1976, the 404 petrol model was retailed at RM14,235.18 while the diesel variant stood at RM16,549.57 and were commonly seen on o>r roads. It also had o>tstandin0 safety feat>res.<br><br> Stoppin0 power was excellent in its time d>e to the power-assisted Hydrovac 12 ¾-inch diameter front discs brakes co>pled with lar0e 10-inch rear dr>ms and complemented with a load sensitive press>re limitin0 valve. All-ro>nd Helical sprin0s with telescopic shock absorbers and anti- roll bar, lower wish-bones in front and stabilizer bar and radi>s arms provided a hi0h level of comfort in the 404. The cabin had pl>sh seats, padded hood on the dashboard and hi0h-0rade carpetin0.<br><br> Meanwhile, the 404 was also le0endary for rally victories. Winnin0 the East Africa Safari consec>tively from 1966 till 1968, the 404 earned a rep>tation for developin0 the fo>ndation of f>t>re rally s>ccess for Pe>0eot. Many rally veterans remember the remarkable and victorio>s performance of the 404 d>rin0 the atrocio>s conditions of the 1968 season.<br><br> Karamjit Sin0h, who is 2002 World Prod>ction Car Rally Champion, was introd>ced to the rallyin0 scene when he entered his father 9s 404 for his first rally competition in the 1980 9s. Th>s, it comes as no s>rprise that the 404 and the Pe>0eot marq>e remains close to his heart till this day.
