061 The cFintail Years d 3 1959 through 1967, were critical to Mercedes- Benz 9s post WWII recovery as all was not prosperous in the 1950s. It was clear to Mercedes management by 1955 that all its senior models were commercial failures. The so-called cPonton d sedans and 190 SL were paying for everything else the company did.

Absence of a V8 and slow arrival of automatic transmissions, A/C and even power steering proved devastating to senior model sales. cAdenauer d styling, handsome though it is, proved out of step for the 1950s. Concerned with cgetting it right d for the next decade, DBAG engineers and designers were torn between a heritage of cextra-uber d carriages for royalty versus the profits flowing in from four cylinder sedans, trucks and buses.

Adding to the challenge Europeans never had the cheap gas still en- joyed in the USA today. Americans had little interest in economy cars. Detroit 9s cin-your-face, flossy-fifties, dollar-grin d styling was also hard to embrace for many Europeans.

North America was none-the-less a huge market Stuttgart felt it must serve. Work begin in earnest in 1956 ... more. less.

when America 9s fins were beginning to bloom. Seldom followers, these were the years of Béla Barényi 9s pioneering patents for Daimler- Benz on passive safety. Already renown for fuel injection, advanced suspension concepts and quality, DBAG had only to package it all in tune with the 1960s. This meant Béla Barényi and the Fintail Years... A Mercedes for Every Season (and every pocketbook) A major strength of Mercedes-Benz is its rich variety of body types in new and older, collectible models. The reason most people own more than one car is every design is a compromise. There are times for a station wagon and times for an SL. The variety of M-B cars and trucks is downright mind boggling. Coupling many body choices with good parts availability for older Mercedes-Benz makes an easy case for multiple Mercedes owner- ship. Your editor has several M-B station wagons (too many at the moment), an SL and, as of last month, an entertaining colder d four door sedan; four decades of top- of-the-line engineering, 1950s, and 60s, and 70s and 80s. The newest is 18 years old, the oldest 43 years old. And all of them, I 9m happy to report, have seen at least 2,000 miles of use during the last 12 months. Your editor 9s latest car adventure explains this issue 9s focus: this 1963 300SE Fintail sedan. It is a 37,000 mile gem owned by two generations of the same family since new, cHeinz d was discovered by David Kehl (Kehl Motor Service) in San Antonio, TX. (more, page 3) maximizing cgreen house d visibility, easy driver view of all four corners of the car, generous trunk space, and (for the Americans at least)&flare! With some countries taxing vehicles by engine size (to finance extensive road modernization we hope), many engine sizes were planned. Ditto for M-B automatic transmission and other options of the day. About this time M-B 9s top engineers were hosted in Detroit by their counterparts at Ford and GM . Seeing the Mark II Continenta l and Cadillac 9s Eldorado Bougham led to DBAG 9s single most costly error of the 1960s. The 600 Grand Mercedes certainly polished M-B 9s image but a mere 2,677 were built in 19 years. Much better was the launch in August, 1959 of the 220b, 220Sb and SEb -- cb d denoting the new 1960s body. (more on page 2) The Fintail sedan was the first Mercedes embracing Béla 9s c passive safety d research and patents from the ground up. These years also pioneered the safety steering wheel and shortly thereafter an energy absorbing steering column . Of this only 6,748 were cflagship d 300SE Long (4 d longer) and 300SE. Of these, less than 500 found their way to North American homes due in part to Studebaker-Packard 9s inept marketing. The world auto- motive press received the Fintail 9s passive safety patents as state-of- the-art, capped in the 300 with air suspension, an aluminum engine and fuel injection. Cadillac, for comparison, didn 9t offer fuel injection for fourteen more years, 1976, and when it appeared it was by Bosch! One of the 300SE 9s master-strokes was the agility of its 108 d wheelbase with a ride that matched cars two foot longer For another comparison with 190E 2.3- 16, below left. The infamous tail fins were deplumed (absence makes the heart grow fonder?) in August, 1965 when the Type 108 and 109 (4 d longer) sedans launched another seven years and 230,000 more SE & SEL with five new engines including three V8s. The history of air suspension, as diesels, has its detractors but forty-four years later Mercedes-Benz and five other car manufacturers offer both air and/or hydropneumatic suspension. Likewise, today over 65% of all the cars in sold in Europe are diesels. CONDITION #6 Seriously damaged or deteriorated, excluding fires. More practical for parting out. Rebuilding is unlikely. CONDITION #5 Needs restoration. May or may not be running, but not wrecked, or stripped. Too good to part out. CONDITION #4 Drivable, needs only minor work to be reliable. Seat belts would be installed for $20. Power steering and automatic transmissions were options except in senior models. Copyright SLML 2006 May, 2006SLMarket Letter Vol. II, No. 0613 Fate of our RHD 190SL Toclose our RHD 190SL adventure, the car we brought to Australia for the 2004 Adelaide Rally has been sold in Sydney for US $57,800 -- which just paid for the car plus our extensive pre-trip preparations described in SLML # 040, 043 and 046. We added 6,000 miles to its 25,000 original miles: about 3,000 miles in the US and 3,000 miles in Australia. The car totally exceeded out expectations. It was faster than expected, comfortable and totally reliable. Fintail Flagship (continued from page 1, column 3) Choosing to buy this car was not difficult. It conforms to several SLML mantras: cBuy the oldest car you 9re brave enough to buy d, cChoose top-of the-line models with all the bells and whistles -- even if they all don 9t work d, and cThe best value for the buck is often Condition 2. d Fintails only came in sedans, that 9s a negative but this was reflected in our purchase price, about $10,000 counting service for the 1,200 mile honeymoon drive home. A compa- rable condition convertible would have cost four+ times more. We are optimistic that Fintail values will continue to climb because of their advanced engineering, rally successes and low survival rate, especially the 3.0 liter variants. As the Adenauer 300 before it, the 300SE retailed for a hefty price above Cadillac 9s flagship Fleetwood sedan of the same years. DRIVING THE CAR HOME: Some of you know I encourage SLML subscribers to drive Condition 2 cars home rather than trucking. Granted it 9s a risk but, heck, adventure travel is cin d -- and you don 9t have to pay a tour company thousand of dollars for the privilege. Besides, by definition a Condtion 2 car should be roadworthy. I started assessing this one for the drive by asking my inspector in San Antonio to list all the things he would do before a cross country trip. That 9s right, I bought the car sight unseen. Inspection report was above average in every respect ...no glaring problems anywhere. Car had been repainted and reupholstered in correct colors. Even the chrome was unpitted and the A/C worked! Odometer read 57,800 and papers in the trunk all showed lower numbers on earlier dates... leading one to believe mileage was genuine. Also papers showed the same family (two generations) owned the car since new. Sold by a Dusseldorf M-B dealer in 1963 the car received several licenses in Madrid before migrating to Spring, Texas in 1984. The car was only driven 1,500 miles from 1989 to 2006. Only negative was a miserable idle and hard starting when cold. Probably dried gas residue and who know what in the gas tank. After purchase I tracked down a fresh set of radiator hoses, belts and suspension rubber. I found and bought a spare used water pump and new water thermostat. Brakes and air suspension had apparently had major service within the last few years as they are working perfectly. I asked David Kehl to drive the car for a few days to force foibles to the surface. They came. Low use can lead to rusty tanks, residue in the several filters, and sticky fuel injection pumps, but attacking the obvious accomplished little. Fuel delivery continued to play its tricks even after cleaning all filters and lines. A $713 electric fuel pump was inescapable.
