The Chesapeake Chapter of the New England MG cT d Register, Ltd. The Square Rigger July 2003 BCD 2003 Special Edition Chairman 9s Comments John M. Tokar I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the BCD Planning Committee and other BCD volunteers from The Chesapeake Chapter for their help in making our Original British Car Day 2003 at Smokey Glen Farm (SGF) such a success.
Many long hours were expended --- all our volunteers deserve to be commended for a job well done! There was food, games, and many fantastic cars for all to see and enjoy. The food lines were non-existent and the food was up to SGF's high quality standards.
The management at SGF was also pleased with the outcome of the show and they are anxious to have us return again next year. Although the wet grass and gray skies had a major effect on the number of cars on the show field, we still managed to attract 245 show cars, 26 vendors, and over 570 spectator cars. I am especially pleased to report that our efforts paid off this year --- after reviewing the data, we found that we made a profit of ... more.
less.
$1428.13 --- this despite the fact of the poor weather and lower than usual car turnout.

Just think of what we can do on a good weather day and a higher car count! Our special thanks go out to the Linganore HS Band Boosters for all their help with spectator parking and traffic control. They were well organized and did an outstanding job that contributed to the overall success of our show.

With the profit realized from this year's BCD, we will have the opportunity to make a charitable donation to the Linganore HS Band Boosters and to other charitable organizations as well. Many of the local car clubs were well represented at BCD, including the MGCC Washington DC Centre, The National Capital Triumph Register, The Capital Mini Register, and The Nation's Capital Jaguar Owners Club. We would also like to extend our thanks to all of the people from these organizations that helped with car parking for BCD this year.

Later this year, we plan to meet with representatives from these clubs to involve them more formally in the BCD planning process for next year. This year's vendor sales were brisk, despite the wet field and threatening weather. Most of the vendors I spoke to were pleased with the vendor layout and their sales results.

The 8 covered vendors were especially pleased with their location! One vendor in particular, Steve McLean, from Manhattan Jaguar in Rockville, called me recently and said he was impressed with SGF's location and venue. Steve was the one vendor that probably had the most to gain from his sales experience at BCD.

He actually sold two cars at our show, the new XJR and XJX that were displayed in his flea market space! In addition, he said that he was expecting orders for more cars as well. Not a bad take for $105 worth of flea market space!

He expressed his thanks and appreciation for allowing him to participate in our show and is very anxious to have Manhattan Jaguar represented again next year. We plan to meet with Steve to discuss a possible 1 Chesapeake Chapter corporate sponsorship arrangement for BCD 2004. BCD 2003 Financial Statement In closing, I would like to mention that with only days before the show, there was a major crime spree in the city where the BCD trailer was stored.

Thieves cut through the steel latch on the trailer door and managed to make off with most of our pewter BCD octagonal award plate trophies. I was shocked and saddened at the nature of this crime. We reported the incident to the local Maryland State Police and I will follow developments on the case closely.

Thanks to quick action by our Regalia Chairman, we were able to receive enough replacement trophies in time for the show. Centre BRITISH CAR DAY 2003 June 15th, 2003 F ather 9s Day this year saw another very enjoyable British Car Day at Smokey Glen Farm, hosted by our sister club, the Chesapeake Chapter of the New England cT d Register.

Chairman John Tokar and his team did themselves proud, as usual, and had a reasonable number of beautiful cars turn out in spite of the threatening weather. There were lots of vendors selling everything from old rusty parts to brand new NOS bits, to Union Jack flags and Union Jack unmentionables. If it was for British Cars, it was there.

I could have spent a small fortune on shiny things I didn 9t need. It is always fun to see what turns up, and this year, aside from the two early Lotus Elans, the most unusual car was a mid- eighties Aston Martin Lagonda sedan. What a car.

Long, low, and wide, this thing was a real head-turner. I talked with the owner, and we may see this car in the Prince of Wales class at Hunt Country! At the other end of the spectrum was the 1961 Ford Anglia that looked to be all original.

They weren 9t common here back in 1961, and to see one surviving today is very rare. Of particular note is the change in the serving of lunch by the Smokey Glen folks. This year they were well prepared, and the lunch line took only as long as it took to place your order, a welcome change from last year.

Plus, they offered a wide variety of entrées for the discriminating palate. As time goes by, and with the weather helping, next year should be an even better show, and we all hope that the attendance grows back to the levels we were used to seeing at Bowie. Good luck to you John and company!

www.mgcarclubdc.com/index.html _____________________________ From the Historian's Desk Nancy Woodall Arrayed below are the pictures of all the winners who stayed long enough at BCD to get their award at the award ceremony. This also happens to be the weekend of the Highland County Harvest Festival so there will be a lot to do and see. They held the blocked rooms only until March 1, so if you're not registered yet, you need to get moving!

Mike may be able to wrangle a couple more rooms if we've used up the block of rooms, or to find space in some of the B&Bs in town, if we get a big response. Many people book their rooms a year in advance for the Harvest Festival which is why we need to be thinking about this now! The phone # for the Highland Inn is 540 468-2143 and the blocked rooms are in the name of "Chesapeake Chapter." Please, please let Mike Hughes know after you have made your reservation so he can keep track of the bookings and know if he needs to make the arrangements for additional rooms!!

19 October : The 8 th Annual Hunt Country Classic , Svea Farm, Middleburg, VA.
