S eventy-five Team Members from Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama, LLC (HMMA) recently traveled to Namyang Research and Development Center near Seoul, Korea. The purpose of the over 14,000 mile round-trip journey was for assembly and qual- ity process training to prepare for the upcoming all new 2007 Santa Fe sport utility vehicle (SUV) to be manufactured at the Montgomery plant. Building of the SUV prototype has begun at the plant and production is scheduled for spring 2006.
Namyang R&D Center is a cutting-edge facility encompassing the whole design process, from pre-design studies, prototyping and full-scale aerodynamic testing to crash testing and final test driving along a 60km test track. Employing over 6,500 engineers, Namyang R&D serves as the hub of Hyundai-Kia 9s global network and consolidates the company 9s research efforts around the world. cThe new R&D Center in Namyang is probably one of the finest in the world, d said John Kalson, Director of Production for the Hyundai Alabama plant.
cI continue to be impressed by the level of detail and planning that goes into each Hyundai operation and program. d Kalson continued, cI was equally impressed, but not surprised, by all our Team Members and how well they adapted ... more.

to the challenge. It was as if they had been doing this for years. d The seventy-five Team Members consisted of production workers, engineers and man- agement. Team Members selected for this initial training will in turn train others as the plant progresses into pre-production this month and start of production next spring.

The training program was conducted during three separate trips of twenty-five Team Members each, traveling at two-week intervals. During each two-week visit, Team Members had an opportunity to participate in cultural activities, including an overview of South Korea 9s economic and political progress, a visit to a traditional Korean History Cultural Folk Center, a sight-seeing and shopping excursion in Seoul and the experience of enjoying traditional Korean cuisine. cAfter spending two weeks at the R&D Center in Korea, there is no doubt in my mind that Hyundai will reach its goal of being one of the top five automobile manufacturers by 2010.

Their attention to detail and commitment to quality are second to none, d said Frank Barnes, Hyundai Alabama production Team Member. Barnes was on the second of three training groups to travel to Namyang. cI was impressed with how modern Korea is.

Although the Koreans place the coun- try 9s goals over their own, they still have their own identity and individuality while operating as one. d 1 December 2, 2005 ©HMMA 2005 INSIDE INSIGHTS HYUNDAI ALABAMA TEAM MEMBERS VISIT KOREA TO LEARN SANTA FE PRODUCTION . . .

. . .

.1 HYUNDAI LAUNCHES NEW SANTA FE IN KOREA . . .

. . .

. . .

. .2 QUALITY CORNER THE IMPORTANCE OF ONE . .

. . .

. . .

. .2 HMMA COOKBOOK . .

. . .

. . .

. . .

. . .

. .2 CALL TO ACTION: HMMA SUPPORTS TOYS FOR TOTS . .

. . .2 HMMA STRIVES TO BE LEADER IN INDUSTRY .

. . .

. . .

. . .

. . .

. .3 HYUNDAI MODELS TOP CRASH TESTS . .3 SHOW YOUR TEAM SPIRIT .

. . .

. . .

. . .

.4 SHOP 8TIL YOU DROP . . .

. . .

. . .

. . .

. . .4 HOLIDAY BREAK COMING UP& .

. . .

. . .4 HYUNDAI ALABAMA TEAM MEMBERS VISIT KOREA TO LEARN SANTA FE PRODUCTION Team Members learn quality training on 2007 Santa Fe SUV Team Members enjoy cultural experience at National Museum in Seoul 2 Hyundai Launches New Santa Fe in Korea H yundai Motor Co.

introduced the all-new Santa Fe sports utility vehicle in Korea on November 22. CALL TO ACTION: HMMA Supports Toys for Tots Once again, HMMA will be supporting the US Marine Corps Reserve 9s Toys for Tots program.

This program aims to provide new toys to underprivileged children. Last year, HMMA was instrumental in assisting the less fortunate children in our commu- nity. With the devastation created by the extensive hurricane season this past sum- mer, this year 9s Toys for Tots drive is espe- cially critical to the Marine Corps Reserve.

Please consider showing your support of our local community and that of our local USMC Reserve unit by purchasing a new, unwrapped toy for a less fortunate child. Pick-up boxes will be located at the entry of each shop until December 12. Toys should be new and unwrapped.

The collection of toys by the US Marines is scheduled for December 14. Contact the Diversity Department at 387-8103 for more details. Dear HMMA Team, Hard work abounds here at HMMA.

It takes each and every one of us working as a team to accomplish the tasks set before us that enable us to achieve the goals that will make HMMA a front runner in the auto industry. Each and every day we come one step closer to perfecting our processes, our standard and our quality. It is this high stan- dard that is raising Hyundai above mediocrity, and opening the eyes of the industry to show we will be a top-ranked auto manufacturer.

HMMA now has a chance to yet again show its excellence by becoming one of the few OEM 9s to be Certified ISO/TS 16949:2002. This will be a major mile- stone for HMMA and will take the support of all Team Members from all departments in order to achieve this ini- tiative and be successful. Our first step in achieving this milestone is our pre-certification audit.

A third party consulting firm will be on site to conduct a pre-certification audit of our HMMA Business Management System to gauge exactly where HMMA stands for certification. The third party will be on site from December 12 through December 17, 2005. They will conduct audits on all departments and on all shifts.

We ask that each department be prepared and cooperate. In this first round of audits, we want them to find those weaknesses. This initial round of audits will be the first of four major steps in certification.

In February and March ,we will have the second Pre-Assessment Audit and Readiness Review, which along with the Certification Audit, will be done by our contracted Registrar. During the Readiness Review and Certification Audit, mistakes count. We need our vulnerabilities found now, so we have time to correct them, and make our team stronger.

Join us and let our team show this nation and this industry that HMMA holds the key to be a benchmark. That here in Alabama, quality is our first objective. Through your hard work, teamwork and initiative, we will strive to be a leader in the auto industry.

We will be awarded ISO/TS 16949:2002 certification in 2006. The Pontiac G6 two-door coupe received the top score in rollover protection, with the government estimating a 9 percent chance of vehicle rollover during a crash.

The Mitsubishi Lancer, meanwhile, fared worst in side-impact protection among the vehicles; the four-door version was the only model to get two stars on side-impact protection for the driver. The score was based on previous testing and denotes a 21 to 25 percent chance of serious injury in a real-world crash. Dan Irvin, a Mitsubishi spokesman, noted that it was an old test and said that side curtain air bags will become standard equipment on the vehicle in the 2007 model year.

The Lancer received top scores in frontal protection. NHTSA typically conducts new tests on vehicles when they are redesigned.
