This very readable book explores the Chinese food phenomenon. Jennifer 8 Lee, a rst generation American of Chinese parents, begins her investigation when 110 Powerball winners had the correct numbers for the same drawing.

It was established that everyone had used the lucky numbers from their fortune cookies. This led the author to ponder: Why is the food at home different from the food at Chinese restaurants? Who made the rst fortune cookie?

How have Chinese restaurants in uenced American culture? Jennifer 8 Lee traveled the world to answer these and many more questions about Chinese food. -- Ann Bavin, Director Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd How would you like the punishment of kneeling on raw grits for several hours?

The Secret Life of Bees is about the loss of a mother, racism, and women in our lives who become mothers. The story is about the power of love and the secrets of three strong beekeeping women and a Black Madonna. The Secret Life of Bees proves that a family can be made of all kinds of people from different races and still be a place where love is found and nurtured.

This is an extraordinary story. -- Becky Barr, Teen/Children 9s Services Goin 9 Someplace Special by Patricia C. McKissack.

One of my favorite books as a children 9s librarian is cGoin 9 Someplace Special d by Patricia C. McKis- sack. This historical ction picture book tells the story of a young African American girl in segregated 1950 9s Nashville, Tennessee.

This young girl faces a series of indignities and obstacles to get to one of the few integrated places in town: someplace special -- the public library. The setting has been c- tionalized; however, the events were taken from the author 9s childhood growing up in Nashville. Christine Kalb, Children 9s Services Wow1 (CD) -- I found this very inspiring I can Only Imagine (CD) -- I love the songs on this CD Elizabeth: The Golden Age (DVD) -- A very intriguing movie Alvin & the Chipmunks (DVD) -- Awesome, cute movie The Bee Movie (DVD) -- fun movie & the songs are so cute.

-- Shelly Tucker, Clerk I can E liz a Alvin The B -- Sh 5 Staff Picks I Am America (and so can you!) by Stephen Colbert If you think that the show cColbert Report d is funny, read the book. Colbert 9s sense of humor translates to text and graphics pretty well. His book adds meaning to the words cmixed media d.

No spoilers here! --Shelley Bylica, Public Services Librarian King of the Wind by Henry Marguerite (Newberry Award winner/Juvenile) This book gives us a glimpse of Moroccan culture and horses. The story tells of an Arabian Stallion named Sham and his mute horse boy who are sent to America as a gift to a boy king.

This was one of the nest and fastest horses from the Sultan 9s stables. The passage on the ship included little food for the horse and boy, which left them both in a malnourished and unattractive state. The boy king rejected the horse for his royal stables.

Sham goes through many mistreatments and separation from his horse boy. Eventually the horse is recognized for his speed, and this Arabian stallion becomes a founding sire to the thoroughbred horses of today. This was a heartwarming story about overcoming obstacles and perseverance.

-- Robyn Bovia, Clerk 90 Minutes in Heaven by Don Piper This is a true account of Don Piper 9s visit to heaven after being pronounced dead for ninety minutes as a result of an automobile accident. A very interesting story. -- Sheila Tackett, Clerk 4 Director 9s Corner The major project for 2008 is to improve the collection of items for your selection.

This is accomplished through a ma- jor weeding project and purchase of current titles. Weeding refers to the removal of books and audiovisual ma- terials from the library. The criteria for removal includes items that haven 9t circulated in years, are damaged, have misin- formation, and have been superseded.

Multiple copies are removed when they are no longer popular. These discarded items are then donated to the Friends of Marvin Memorial Library for their book sales. The second step for the improvement of the collection is to purchase new items.

The selection of new material comes from review magazines, best-seller lists, TV shows and movie alerts, and sales people. Suggestions from patrons are also welcome. My personal goal is to have the popular non ction books on the shelves in a timely fashion.

So walk, bike or drive to the Marvin Memorial Library and check us out. La corda d 9oro by Yuki Kure La corda d 9oro is amazing!

This manga is about this girl named Kahoko Hino who lives in Japan and goes to a high school that is split into two, a school for music students and a school for general education students. The music students still take classes like math and science, but they are professionally helped with their major musical instrument. Kahoko Hino is a second year (like a junior) in high school at the general education school.

There is a big music competition held every couple of years, and the student to win is guaranteed to go pro. A magical musical fairy (I know it 9s corny) named Lili wants Kahoko to enter the contest even though she can 9t play any type of instrument! Lili gives her a magical violin that will play for her as she competes against six people.

-- Delaney Buechner Lord Loss. Book one of the Demonata series by Darren Shan. A very gruesome book for those with strong stomachs and a love for the macabre.

Grubitsch Grady is a pretty ordinary kid until he comes home one night, witnesses demons killing his family, and only escapes by the help of magic. This opens his life up to a magical world full of demons, warlocks, wizards, werewolves, and adventure beyond his wildest imagination. Darren shan is an entrancing author who kept me between the pages of this book until I nish- ed and was just begging for the rest of the series.

Darren Shan has two series out in the U.S. : The Demonata, which he has not yet completed, and Cirque du Freak. I highly recommend this author -- his stories are quite enthralling for those who love a little terror and gore.

--Trevor Extine the p a g ed an rest h as Th F m e d t ! 7 Board of Trustees Our appointed Board of Trustees provides oversight for all library activities.
