Pack 95 Pinewood Derby 2005 Rules The Pinewood Derby is Pack 95 9s annual event where scouts, with their parents 9 help, build wooden cars for show and speed competitions. Pack winners can go to the Thompson Poudre District Competition. The goal is&FUN!

Schedule 1. Car check in will occur on Friday, 3/4/05 between 6:00PM and 8:00PM. 2.

The race will begin at 9:00AM on Saturday, 3/5/05. The race order is: Tigers, Wolves, Open class [for non-scouts], Bears, Webelos1, Webelos2, the finals and the awards. 3.

All scouts, parents and guests are welcome for the entire derby. 4. We plan to serve coffee and juice at 9:00 AM and hot dogs and soda at 11:00AM.

Car Specifications 1. All Cars must comply with the District rules. These are the 3 rd page of this document.

2. The car is restrained on the track by a dowel prior to the start of the race. The front of the car must be designed so that none of the car projects beyond the starting dowel.

Any car that projects beyond the starting dowel will be disqualified. 3. Axle slots are provided on the car body.

Registration will occur on Friday, 3/4/05 between 6:00PM and 8:00PM. a.<br><br> Each car will be assigned a number for identification. The number must be on the body of the car at the time of registration. Please find your car number on the table on page two of this information packet.<br><br> Since this material will be posted on the Pack 9s website, http://home.comcast.net/~fcpack95/ , initials are used to identify the scouts. b. Cars will be inspected for compliance with the rules.<br><br> Cars that fail the inspection may be modified and submitted for re-inspection. Please bring your own parts and tools. c.<br><br> Cars that pass inspection will be impounded. No additional lubricant may be used on the car once it is impounded. 2.<br><br> The race will occur on Saturday, 3/5/05 and start at 9:00AM. a. Only race officials will be permitted in the track and car impound area.<br><br> b. Races will first be run within each den to determine den champions. c.<br><br> The six fastest cars in the pack will then race to determine the pack champions. d. For both the den and pack races, each participating car will race on each lane.<br><br> The time for each car will be the average of its times in all lanes. e. The average time will be used to score the cars.<br><br> Den times will be used in the den races. The pack race will use only the times in the pack race. f.<br><br> Show winners are decided by impartial judges who do not know the Pack 95 Scouts. Awards 1. Medals will be awarded to the 1 st through 3 rd fastest and 1 st through 3 rd best of show cars in each Den.<br><br> 2. Trophies will be given to the 1 st through 3 rd place winners for Pack speed and show. 3.<br><br> Scouts that do not win one of the race or show awards will receive a participation medal. 4. Ribbons will be given to the children participating in the open class races.<br><br> Please let Walter know if you have children participating in this event so that sufficient ribbons can be purchased. Thompson-Poudre District Competition 1. Typically, the district races have had separate Tiger and Pack competitions.<br><br> The Pack may send the top 3 show and speed cars from each of the Tiger and Pack levels (up to 12 cars). Tiger cars that place in the top 3 in the Pack competition will be permitted to choose their district competition level. 2.<br><br> Those cars going to the districts should be left with the race officials. These rules are intended for Thompson- Poudre District level competition and supersede all other rules governing the construction, racing and judging of BSA Pinewood Derby entries.<br><br> 1) LENGTH, WIDTH, & CLEARANCE: a) Maximum overall width (including wheels & axles) shall not exceed 2 ¾ inches. b) Minimum width between the inside edge of the wheels shall be 1 ¾ inches. c) Minimum clearance between the car bottom and the track shall be 3/8 of an inch.<br><br> d) Maximum overall length will not exceed 7 inches. e) The wheel base (distance between front and rear axles) may be changed however the axles must be parallel (i.e. the measured dis tance between the axles must be equal on both sides of the car).<br><br> f) Maximum height from the track to the top of the car shall not exceed 3 inches. 2) WEIGHT & APPEARANCE: a) Cars weight shall not exceed 141.75 grams (5 ounces). Readings of the Official Race Scale will be considered final.<br><br> The car m ay be hollowed out and built up to the maximum weight by adding solid materials only , provide they are firmly attached, or built into to the car. No loose materials are allowed (i.e. not rattling).<br><br> b) The original pine block received in the kit must be used. Additional materials may be added as long at the length, width, heig ht and weight limitations noted in Section 2a are met. c) Use of Mercury for adding weight will not be allowed.<br><br> d) Details such as steering wheels, drivers, spoilers, decals, painting and interior details are permissible as long as these deta ils meet the length, width, height and weight limitations noted in Section 2a. e) Cars with wet paint or any other wet spray-on material will not be accepted. f) NO PRE-MANUFACTURED WOOD BODIES ARE PERMITTED.<br><br> 3) WHEELS AND AXLES: a) Only the Official Scout Grand Prix wheels and axles may be used and must display Official BSA imprint on inside of hub. Official BSA wheels and axles may be altered by entrants provide the Official BSA imprint remains legible. b) Wheel bearings, washers, or bushings of any kind are prohibited.<br><br> The wheels may only contact bare wood, painted wood, and the axle. c) Axles must be attached to the wood body and not onto/into another material attached to the car. d) Hubcaps of any kind are not allowed.<br><br> e) The car shall not ride on any kind of springs. f) The car must be free wheeling with no starting device or other propulsion. g) Only the wheels may be used to guide the car down the track.<br><br> No rollers, or similar devices, may be used to guide the car. 4) LUBRICATION: a) Only dry powdered lubricants, such as graphite, may be used. b) Cars may be lubricated before inspection.<br><br> No further lubrication will be permitted. 5) GROUND RULES: a) Cars must have been made for this school year 9s pack level race. Car 9s from a previous years derby are not permitted.<br><br> b) If a car jumps off the track, or leaves its lane, the heat will be run again. If the same car jumps off the track a second tim e and it is determined not to be a track problem, the heat will be run again without the interfering car. The interfering car will lose th e heat.<br><br> c) If a car suffers a mechanical problem (i.e. loses and axle, wheel, etc.), the repair must be accomplished within 10 minutes and then the heat will be run again. If repairs cannot be made within the 10 minute period the car will lose the heat.<br><br> d) Only Race Officials will be permitted into the registration and track areas. THIS RULE WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED. 6) INSPECTIONS & DISPUTES: a) Each car must pass inspection of the Official Inspection Team before it may compete.<br><br> The Official Inspection Team has the righ t to disqualify those cars which do not meet these rules. Car owners will be informed of the violations and given an opportunity to modify the car to meet these rules before the first heat is run. Any car found to be in violation of this rule after having run one or mo re heats will be disqualified.<br><br> b) The top three cars will be subject to further inspection at the Official Race Judge 9s discretion. c) Any participant (including parent of the participant) has the right of appeal to the Rules Committee for an interpretation of t hese rules. The Rules Committee, by majority vote, will be the final judge of these rules.<br><br> d) Ungentlemanly or unsportsmanlike conduct by any participant or member of the audience will not be tolerated and will be grounds for expulsion from the competition and/or race area.
