His family owned a farm and worked the land.

During the years of the Great Depression, many farmers lost their crops and could not afford to keep their farms. When this happened to the Chavez family, they, like many other families, moved to California to look for work. The family became migrant farm workers, moving from place to place to pick fruits and vegetables as they ripened.

Because the family moved to harvest crops, Cesar Chavez changed schools more than thirty times. The family was so poor that Cesar often had to help with the picking and not go to school. After eighth grade, Cesar Chavez left school to take care of his parents.

Cesar Chavez was a farm worker all his life and, like other farm workers, toiled long hours for little pay. Many farm workers were made very ill by the dangerous chemicals used on the crops. There was no money for, and no one to protect, the many workers who were too sick or too old to work.

Cesar Chavez became determined to change these terrible conditions. He began by helping the Community Service Organization (C.S.O.). CESAR CHAVEZ (sing to the tune of cTen Little Indians d) Cesar Chavez, migrant worker, Helped set up a labor union, Led a boycott, grapes and lettuce, Fought for workers 9 rights.

Cesar Chavez, Mexican-American, Led a workers 9 voting drive, Boycotts, strikes, and peaceful marches, Fought for workers 9 rights. Create a sign that might have been held up at a National Farm Workers Association (NFWA) meeting.

Many migrant workers were not American citizens, so were not allowed to vote. The C.S.O. helped workers to become citizens and gain a voice in government.

To further their work, Cesar Chavez took classes at night and became a good speaker. In 1962, he helped begin the National Farm Workers Association. Cesar Chavez led a boycott of California grapes and lettuce.

He asked people not to buy lettuce or grapes until the workers who picked the produce were better treated. Many people in many parts of the world stopped buying these products. As fewer people bought lettuce and grapes, companies lost money and so began to listen to the workers 9 demands.

Cesar Chavez believed in peaceful protests. He organized boycotts, made speeches, and led marches. To make changes he felt were especially important, he went on hunger strikes, refusing to eat until certain practices were changed.

His brave work helped improve the lives of farm workers and made many agricultural practices safer for us all. They moved from farm to farm harvesting the ripe food.

Draw a picture of the fruits and vegetables he picked in each season. Did You Know& Cesar Chavez 9s family was so poor he did not always have shoes to wear. He walked barefoot to school.

His family picked fruits and vegetables all year long: lettuce and peas in the winter, cherries and beans in the spring, grapes and corn in the summer, and cotton in the fall. Before farm workers worked to gain rights, farm owners could fire a worker for no reason! Cesar Chavez walked 250 miles from his home to Sacramento, the capital of California, to bring attention to the needs of farm workers.

Read, Sing, and Learn Mini-Books: Famous Americans © Crocco & Dunn, Scholastic Teaching Resources
