The NIH Children 9s School Since 1953, the NIH Children 9s School has educated school-age patients of the Clinical Center. The school is subsi- dized by the Federal government and is available free of charge to Clinical Center patients. It is an accredited satellite of the Montgomery County Public School system.
Our teachers come from the school system 9s Home and Hospital Instruction Service. Our goal is to maintain the continuity of education between the student 9s home school and the NIH Children 9s School. How do I reach the school?

This includes those in regular education grades (kindergarten through grade 12) and those needing special education. General educational development (GED) candidates and speakers of English as a second language are instructed as well. Patients staying at the Children 9s Inn may also attend school daily in the Clinical Center 9s classroom.
How do students enroll in the NIH Children 9s School? Students enroll in the NIH Children 9s school by making a request to the social worker, nurse, or physician. One of these staff members will contact the school.

The school director asks patients about their educational needs shortly after admission. When is the school open?<br><br> Classroom hours: Weekdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Office hours: Weekdays 8 a.m.<br><br> to 3 p.m. The school calendar follows to the Montgomery County Public Schools 9 schedule for the opening and closing of the school year and for Christmas and Easter breaks. All other holidays follow the Federal government calendar.<br><br> Does the NIH Children's School cover the same subjects as the student 9s home school? Teachers make every effort to keep students working in their own textbooks and at the same pace as their class- mates at home. Patient Information The NIH Children 9s School 1 Students should bring textbooks and assignments from their home school when they come to the Clinical Center.<br><br> If students arrive without them, an NIH teacher will contact the home School to get materials needed during the hospital stay. When necessary, NIH teachers can make a curriculum for the student from NIH School resources. How do students get credit for school attendance during their hospital stays?<br><br> Students are not usually considered absent from their home schools while they attend the NIH Children 9s School, High school students will receive credit towards graduation. Upon discharge, students receive a statement of attendance or a progress report from the Montgomery County Public School system. What if the student cannot leave the hospital room to attend school?<br><br> Students are encouraged to attend school in the classroom whenever possible. However, if they are confined to their hospital rooms, students may receive daily individualized bedside instruction by the school 9s teachers.
