News letter J uly - Septem ber 2009 Issue 68 July 3 September 2009 I ssue 68 Gerotek High Speed Oval 26 July 2009 Sponsored By As is normal for this event, the committee arrived at six o 9clock sharp to start setting up, it was still dark and the temp was around -1deg Celsius, but soon the banners and registration table up, and the computers and the DJ were ready in the timing boma well before starting time. The MSA clerks of the course and Gerotek representative were there nice and early, so the drivers briefing was held a little after eight.

The ambulance crew arrived and we were able to start our first runs around 08h30. After a small incident of an Audi forgetting to slow down when exiting the track, the rest of the day ran trouble free. By 14h30 all 70 cars entered, had run both their runs and at prize giving, the fastest Opel was Ernst V/D Walt with 255km/h, well done, this is the second year that this speed has been achieved.

will be a difficult record to break at our 2010 event. Top speed on the day was Mark Andrews in a 8chipped 9 M3 who crossed the line at 260 km/h. (see results sheet for various models and speeds). After prize giving the track was opened for free runs for an hour or so until everyone had had their fill. We closed the track just before 16h00, which is an achievement and credit to all the committee, sub - committee and all the loyal/regular helpers that assisted us in organizing and running such a successful, enjoyable, fun and safe event. This was clearly seen by all the compliments and positive comments we received on the Opel club forum the following day. Thanks to Williams Hunt for their generous sponsorship that we received towards the costs of this event. Also a special thanks to the various car club members who attended and supported us on the day, notably the guys from the Audi and Renault marquees . Newsletter 3 J uly - Septem ber 2009 Issue 68 WOMEN IN MOTORSPORT WOMEN 9S DAY EVENT 09 AUGUST 2009 Three of us Opel Owners Club ladies (Tracey Jordaan, Andriette Pieterse & Trudi King) and two ladies from the HOCSA club (Mahlie Schoults and a Friend) arrived bright and early at Zwartkops Raceway to assist the WIM group (Women In Motorsport) with this awesome Women 9s Day event. We made our way to Clare Vale 9s transporter for some coffee and cinnamon buns. Once we warmed up with a nice cup of coffee, we started to pack gift packs for the ladies participating in the pentathlon. All the ladies got the opportunity to get rides absolutely free in various street cars, hot laps in racing cars, hot laps on super bikes, driver instruction in Audi Advance driving cars and laps on the skidpan. Unfortunately, the public were not able to put their privates vehicles on the track, as it was to busy. Hopefully next year we will get the opportunity to put our own cars on the track. One man even tried to get in on the free rides act by dressing up as women, chest, wig and all. Was very funny. Some Opel Owners Club members arrived later to enjoy the free rides. All in all, we enjoyed meeting new people and connecting with friends. For Women In Motorsport it was a very successful day with a huge turnout. This event has become a yearly feature and we look forward to doing it again next year. Breafast Run To Magalies 16th August 2009 A sunny late winter morning at 07h00 saw the handful of speed freaks assembling at the petrol station on the Lanseria road, after a couple of coffees and the convoy joining from Eastgate we were ready to roll. A busy point and squirt session out to the Harties intersection saw the club cars challenging the odd Ferrari and Lamborghini, but with the Opel drivers not behaving like hooligans. When everyone gathered on the right road, it was pedal to the metal, with OPC Astra 9s, Opc Corsa 9s GTC turbo 9s and a TS chasing all the Guinea fowl out of the way for the rest of the crew following hot on their heels. Top speed achieved on a GPS was *61 km/h and the * doesn 9t represent a c1 d. By the time we reached Magalies, the turbo cars had used over a quarter a tank of fuel, but before refueling a scrumptious buffet breakfast was enjoyed by the 27 members, some who met us at the hotel restaurant. After breakfast on the same road back home. Two OPC 9s managed to hold off a superbike until nearly at the crossroad and the biker gave us a big thumbs up for sweeping the road for him of birds, stray tractors, and not holding him up, goes to show how well 4 tires can stick around corners as the biker was often leaning over 30 deg through some of the corners. Newsletter 3 J uly - Septem ber 2009 Issue 68 ------------------------------------------------------ Social Sports Compact At Tarlton 30th August 2009 Twelve cars met up at Trade Center Hillfox. We then made our way trough to Tarlton for a relaxing day in the sun chatting on enjoying the smell of burning tyres and racing fuel being consumed by some fast monsters for the day. We also had some club guys on the track like Flip Van Zyl with his OPC H doing 12.60 sec and197 km/h, Rex Wilkinson with a Calibra 2.0 T 12.40sec and 207km/h (keep in mind that it weighs in at almost 2 tons including Rex cThe driver d that day), Then we had Nasen from Nascar that did some testing on his new system that he installed to go even faster in the future. ODI Drags 6 thSeptember 2009 Five cars made their way from Eastgate , to the drag strip north of Pretoria, previously known as ODI, but now named Mad Dog Raceway. After a 1 km run the format then changed to ¼ mile times and speeds. And then later in the day it was 1 Km runs again. Top speed achieved on the day by one of our members was Pieter Van Heerden with 221 Km/h in an Astra G OPC, well done, it takes a tricked out road car to do that type of speed. Newsletter 3 J uly - Septem ber 2009 Issue 68 ________________________________________ INTER CAR CLUB CHOP N DOP 13 SEPTEMBER 2009 What a morning it was. Convoy meeting point in North riding was a disaster as a result of a cycling race which was not advertised at all. Alternatively we met at the Shell garage opposite our original meeting point. An awesome turnout of 12 cars arrived at this meeting point. We departed on an alternate route towards Hartebeespoort, having to stop halfway to wait for the Club tow and support vehicle and Danny. En route to our next meeting point the Purple Corsa once again had to create a diversion and got two other members lost. LOL! We finally got back on track after having stopped twice for the Supie which clearly wasn 9t in the mood for the trip. None the less, we finally met up with the three other club members at our second meeting point and then proceeded to the Hartebeespoort Resort. We arrived at the resort with a contingency of 15 cars and parked at our designated parking spots and started set up camp, which didn 9t go without incident. OOC was the second largest club to arrive, the Mazda Club arrived with more cars and the club with the least amount of cars was the Mitsubishi Club, shame. I am very proud of our club members for coming out in force to this event. Before getting a chance to have some coffee and breakfast, Andre, decided it 9s time to get attention and hammered his finger while hammering a pole in the ground for a banner. Tracey had to take him to hospital to get stitches. They returned to the Resort with Andre all bandaged up. The Ford ST and Renault Sport Club 9s had a little running in with each other, but was soon resolved without further incident. Regardless, we all enjoyed the day and some of the members didn 9t want the day to come to an end and they only left at 17h30. A great day with great company.
