Bulletin CQB 01-17 Subject: Snow Intrusion in General Motors rear drum brake assemblies. Vehicles Involved: 1985-1987 Buick Somerset 1985-1989 Buick Skyhawk 1985-1998 Buick Skylark 1985-1988 Cadillac Cimarron 1985-1999 Chevrolet Cavalier 1985-1988 Oldsmobile Firenza 1985-1990 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais 1992-1998 Oldsmobile Achieva 1985-1994 Pontiac Sunbird 1985-1998 Pontiac Grand Am 1995-2000 Pontiac Sunfire Condition: Some customers may complain of rear brake drag, loud clunk or noise after they have operated their vehicles in snow, then the vehicle is parked for an extended amount of time. Occasionally snow may enter one or perhaps both of the rear drum brake assemblies on the vehicles listed above.
If the vehicle is then parked for an extended amount of time, the snow melt (water) may freeze to the brake shoes and drums. Under normal conditions the adhering shoe(s) will break free upon moving the vehicle. However, there have been cases reported where it was not possible to move the vehicle, until the restricted assemblies have been thawed out.
Repair Procedure: General Motors offers new backing plates to replace the existing ones. The revised backing plate is part number # 18015841. Refer to the service manual for replacement procedures.
