Yamanashi Prefectural Museum of Art, established in 1978, is called as cMuseum of Millet d because of our rich collection of Jean-François Millet. We hope you would enjoy being here at the Museum. In the Museum, there exist five main activities : collection, exhibition, preservation, research and education.
Jean-François MILLET Summer, The Gleaners 1853 Jean-François MILLET The Sower 1850 François Auguste René RODIN Claude Lorrain 1880-92 The view of Workshop Jean-Baptiste-Camille COROT Grand Farmland 1860-1865 The Museum has six main policies for collecting works : Western Art, Yamanashi Related Art, Modern Japanese Art, Foreign and Japanese Prints, Modern and Contemporary Sculptures, and Works of Hideo Hagiwara. In Permanent Collection Gallery, works would be changed four times a year, according to the seasons. The most remarkable is the collec- tion of Millet, who is wide- ly known to the Japanese since Meiji period.
His oil paintings such as The Sower , des- s i n s , a n d prints would let you understand his artistic mind and life. In addition to Millet, our collection contains the works of his contemporaries : Corot, Courbet and other artists of Barbizon School. The works of modern Japanese artists are of great importance. Seijuro Nakamaru is one of pioneers of Japanese oil painting, Hisahito Yonekura is an excellent surrealism artist, Ryuzaburo Umehara and Ryohei Koiso are well known artist.<br><br> Shohin Noguchi is well known by her Japanese- style paintings. Tessai Tomioka, Koichiro Kondo, Shunko Mochizuki are other Japanese-style painters. Our collection of Japanese prints is enriched by those of Shunsen Natori, Hideo Hagiwara, and Yukio Fukazawa.<br><br> We also have prints of foreign artists, such as Goya, Blake, Rouault, Miró. In 2000, Hideo Hagiwara, an internationally known artist, donated to the Museum his own collection of more than 4000 works. You would enjoy this collection, which ranges from Japanese prehistoric pottery to contemporary prints, as well as his own works, in Hagiwara Hideo Collection Room, which opens in November 2004.<br><br> At the second floor, we have galleries for temporary exhibitions, which introduce various art works. By attending our educational programs, you would enrich your knowledge: Children 9s Workshops, L e c t u r e s series that open at the same time with each exhibition, Summer Art Lecture , which gives you a chance to talk directly to artist, Minabi organized with the aid of volunteers, which offers every citizen a chance to show their works. The Art of J.<br><br> F. Millet for the Sight- handicapped allows you to experience Millet 9s works by hands. Art Workshops teaches you various tequniques of art.<br><br> Rental Galleries and Studio are open for rent. Art Library, Hi-Definition TV Gallery, and Concert are another friendship program you can enjoy. You may feel the Museum much closer to yourself.<br><br> Concerning the art education at school, we provide several programs : Mobile Art Box for rent, Study Programs for Art Teachers , and Lecture-Delivery Service. On our homepages, you would get various information including exhibition schedules.
