This is the case with the use of tent structures for special events. In July of 1944, the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus performed in Hartford, Connecticut.

A fire broke out in a tent, resulting in the deaths of 167 people. The tent had been waterproofed with a mixture of paraffin and gasoline. The fire spread quickly and with great intensity.

Like the Seton Hall dormitory in 2001, and the Warwick Rhode Island nightclub fire in 2003, the Hartford Circus fire heightened public awareness of the need for fire safety improvements in special events using fabric structures. New protections for the public began to emerge in codes and legislations throughout the nation.
