Spanish Dictionary for the Pulse" Smartpen 1 Spanish Dictionary for the Pulse" Smartpen About this Dictionary Application This Pulse" smartpen Spanish Dictionary application is based on the American Heritage® Spanish Dictionary: Spanish/English, Inglés/Español, Second Edition from Houghton Mifflin. This dictionary features American English and Latin American Spanish. It contains 70,000 entries with more than 120,000 meanings and provides audio for over 40,000 Spanish words, recorded by native Spanish speakers.

The dictionary includes current vocabulary for Internet, telecommunications, and computer technologies. I MPORTANT : This is not a translator or travel phrase application. It is a reference tool and intended for language students at the high school and college levels and language professionals.

To enter an English or Spanish word to translate or a Spanish verb to conjugate, you must launch the application and get to the c Write a word d or c Write a Spanish verb d commands. There are two ways to do this. " Create hand-drawn paper buttons to launch and invoke the commands. See c Creating Hand-Drawn Application Buttons d . " Use the Nav Plus to launch the application and navigate to the Write a word and Write a Spanish verb commands. c Launching the Application d . N OTE : You must invoke the cWrite a word d or cWrite a Spanish verb d commands each time you want to look up a new word or conjugate a verb. Creating Hand-Drawn Application Buttons The easiest way to use this application is to create paper buttons for commonly-used commands. You can create buttons for: " English->Spanish: Tapping this button launches the application to translate from English to Spanish. " Spanish->English: Tapping this button launches the application to translate from Spanish to English. " Conjugation: Tapping this button launches the application to look up Spanish verb conjugations. " Audio: Plays back audio for translations that have audio. Spanish Dictionary for the Pulse" Smartpen 3 Creating Hand-Drawn Application Buttons To set up buttons for the dictionary: 1. Double-tap the center of a Nav Plus to get to the Main Menu. 2. Tap right and down to scroll through your purchased applications and locate the Spanish Dictionary. 4. Tap right to launch the application. The smartpen shows the top of the menu list for the application. 5. Tap down until you reach the Setup menu. Then, tap right to start the setup instructions. N OTE : Be sure your smartpen is not muted to hear the instructions. 6. Follow the instructions to draw the four buttons. After creating these, you can use them at any time to launch the dictionary and invoke the corresponding commands. Launching from the menus is useful when you want to quickly translate a single word, or do not have any pre-drawn command buttons available. 1. Double-tap the center of a Nav Plus to get to the Main Menu. 2. Tap down to scroll to the Applications menu. 3. Tap right and down to scroll through your purchased applications and locate the Spanish Dictionary. 4. Tap right to launch the application. Or, tap down one time, and then tap right to select Spanish to English. This invokes the cWrite a word d command. Spanish Dictionary for the Pulse" Smartpen 7 Using the Word Lookup Feature Using the Word Lookup Feature After launching the application from a hand-drawn button or the Nav Plus menus, you can look up words by writing them in your notebook. 1. Write a word in your notebook. The smartpen screen will display the first dictionary translation of the word. N OTE : You must write in a horizontal direction. The smartpen cannot interpret vertically-written text. 2. If audio is available for the translation, the smartpen shows a note symbol on the right side of the display. To listen to the audio, tap right. Alternatively, tap the Audio button you created during setup. N OTE : If you are translating from English to Spanish, the audio will be the Spanish translation. If you are translating from Spanish to English, then the audio is the word you looked up. 3. To see additional translations, tap down. Spanish Dictionary for the Pulse" Smartpen 8 Using the Word Lookup Feature 4. Tap up to reach the top of the dictionary entry. The display shows the word followed by the total number of translations. 5. The definitions for each main entry are grouped by their part of speech. Headers for each part of speech are included within the list of translations, along with the number of translations that correspond to that part of speech. For example, the word ctrain d can be a noun or a verb. The display shows there are ten instances of train as a noun. 6. Continue to tap down through the noun translations to reach the Transitive verb summary. For train, there are ten instances of train as a transitive verb. Tap down to view these. Continue with this process to view other parts of speech for the current word. Spanish Dictionary for the Pulse" Smartpen 9 Using the Word Lookup Feature 7. To translate another word, tap left to return to the language selection screen, or tap the English->Spanish button. 8. Tap right to re-invoke the cWrite a word d command. 9. Write another word in your notebook to view its translation. N OTE : You can tap the word again at any time to invoke the dictionary application and view the word 9s translations. Spanish Dictionary for the Pulse" Smartpen 10 Conjugating Verbs Conjugating Verbs You can use the dictionary application to view conjugations of verbs. To invoke Conjugation mode, do one of the following " Tap on the Conjugations button you created with the Setup menu. See c Creating Hand-Drawn Application Buttons d , or " Use the Nav Plus to launch the dictionary application and navigate to the Conjugations menu. 1. Double-tap the center of a Nav Plus to get to the Main Menu. 2. Tap down to scroll to the Applications menu. 3. Tap right to launch the application. The smartpen shows the top of the menu list for the application. 5. Tap down until you reach Conjugations. 6. Tap right to invoke the cWrite a Spanish verb d command. 7. Write the infinitive form of a Spanish verb in your notebook. The smartpen recognizes and displays the verb. Spanish Dictionary for the Pulse" Smartpen 12 Conjugating Verbs 8. Tap down to view the first conjugation of the verb. 9. To navigate to different tenses, tap right. 10. To navigate to different persons (first, second, and third person singular and plural), tap down. 11. To conjugate another verb, tap up to return to the infinitive. Then tap left to return to the Conjugations menu. Or, tap on your hand- drawn Conjugations button. You may find it useful to use the Flick and Scrub feature of your Pulse" smartpen to quickly scroll through dictionary content. These are words that are identical in spelling, but which constitute separate entries. These are indicated with superscript numbers. For example, grana 1 and grana 2 . When you enter a word that has homographs, you will see a menu allowing you to choose between the different main entries for that word.
