important event in our nation 9s history, yet many American 9s do not even recognize the significance of that day. It is our responsibility as parents, leaders, and educators in our communities to pass on to our chil- dren the formula of freedom that our founding fathers gave us.

Each year we have the opportunity of celebrating the Constitution. Congress has designated September 17th of each year as "Constitution Day and Citizenship Day" and the week beginning September 17th and end- ing September 23rd as "Constitution Week". During Constitution Week, we celebrate the genius of our Constitution and reaffirm our commitment to its stated purposes: "to form a more perfect Union, estab- lish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity." If you would like to be part of the Constitution Week Committee and help spread the word to local schools please contact Alan Forst at usakids@adelphia.net MCBA ANNUAL DINNER The Martin County Bar Association Annual Dinner will be on June 24, 2006 at the Monarch Country Club.

Justice Major B. Harding will be swearing in the Executive Board. More details including time, and dinner selection soon to follow.

Message from the MCBA President H ello E veryone! As we head to the end of the Bar Association year, I thought it would be a good time to express my sincere thanks and gratitude to a number of peo- ple who have given of their time so freely and generously to make this year, what I hope you all will consider a successful year for the Martin County Bar Association and its membership. Our officers, Vice-President Portia Scott, Secretary Alan Forst, and Treasurer and Social Director Linda Weiksnar have been outstanding this year, and all have put forth extraordinary time and effort assisting me and making my job as President easier.

I also want to single out Alan Forst for some special thanks, with respect to the work he did to arrange for the Supreme Court admission ceremony in Washington, D.C. in February which Dave Steinfeld and I had the honor to attend, and participate in, and also for his yeoman efforts in arranging for the dinner with the Solicitor General of the United States, which in fact was not only a success but one of the more interesting law related functions I have ever attended. Similarly, Linda Weiksnar has done a stellar job as Social Director, and there is no stopping her with respect to expanding our social events and social calendar in the coming year.

Lastly, and certainly not least, Portia Scott has ably assisted me in her role as Vice-President, and the work that she has done with regard to the Association 9s pro bono matters goes above and beyond the call of duty. I could not have been blessed with a better group of people to have as my officers during my year as President, and with Scott Konopka having been nominated to be the next incoming member of the Board of Directors of the Association, I think that Portia will be surrounded by officers of that same high quality. As I have said many times before, a Bar Association can only be as good as its members, and in particu- lar its Committees.

I want to specially thank all of the Committee Chairs who volunteered to serve, and espe- cially thank George Bush, the Chairman of the Professionalism Committee, Jack Cox, the Chairman of the Judicial Relations Committee, Linda Weiksnar the Chair of the Social Committee, Leslie Adams the Chair of the Young Lawyers Committee, Wes Harvin. Chairman of the Elder Law, Probate and Guardianship Committee, Rhonda Werner-Schultz, Chair of the Family Law Committee, Eric Buetens, Chairman of the Library Committee, Larry Stewart and Jack Sobel, the Co-Chairs of the Golf Committee, and Scott Konopka Chairman of the Trial Lawyers Committee. These Committees were all reactivated this year, and have had regular meetings and/or spe- cial functions, from which all of our members can benefit.

The Bench-Bar Conference that we had at the March 2006 luncheon was outstanding, and I commend Jack Cox, George Bush, and Oliveann Lancy for all of their efforts in putting that program together, and thank all of the judges who participated in that program and who regularly attend our luncheon meetings, committee meetings and other functions, and I firmly believe that the attendance of the members of our judiciary at our Association 9s events enriches the practice of law for all of us and our clients, and makes our legal community and the level of professionalism at which we practice in that community unique and priceless. Special thanks to Judge William Roby for his continued involvement with the Association. Message from the MCBA President continued on Page 3 .

. . .

. . We still have the upcoming lunch in April, which will occur on April 21, 2006, and at which presentations will be given by Project Graduation, the Guardian ad Litem program, and a presentation by our Family Law judges. Our May luncheon, scheduled to occur on May 19, 2006 features Alan Bookman, the President of the Florida Bar as our speaker, and on June 3, 2006, our Annual Golf Tournament takes place at the Fox Club.

Our last event of the year will occur on Saturday evening June 24, 2006, when the Martin County Bar Association Annual Dinner will take place at the Monarch Country Club, and Justice Major B. Harding will be our guest speaker, and will swear in the incoming set of offi- cers of the Association for next year. I also want to give a speak thank you to my law partners and staff for this assistance and support.

Lastly, I wanted to update you on our Independent Judiciary Project, and the work that we have been doing both on a local and state level on that subject. The videotape which Judge Roby and I have been working on is in production, and we hope to be able to debut it at either the Florida Bar Annual meeting taking place in Boca Raton June 21-24, 2006, or at the Voluntary Bar Leaders Conference in Fort Lauderdale which takes place July 20-22, 2006. Judge Roby is to be thanked and commended for all of his hard work on the videotape, and we are excited about the quality of the product we are expecting to unveil as soon as it is completed.

I will be participating in the American Inn of Court Foundation National Leadership Conference as a panelist at their ple- nary session on Judicial Independence on Friday, May 19, 2006 in Orlando, and I am honored and humbled by the opportunity to do so. Judge Roby and I will be participating in the panel on Judicial Independence at the Voluntary Bar Leaders Conference in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday morning July 22, 2006, and I will be attend- ing the Florida Bar Meeting in Boca Raton in June 2006, and discussing all of these issues and what other Bar Associations around the State and Nation are doing with regard to this issue, when I attend the meeting of the Independent Judiciary Committee of the Florida Bar of which I am a member. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the upcoming remaining lunches, the golf tourna- ment, and especially the Annual Dinner, which should be a wonderful event both professionally and socially, and thoroughly enjoyable with the attendance of Justice Harding, who is one of the most outstanding individuals I have ever had the pleasure to know.

See you there!
