2006 V0cto70an School Spo7ts Awa7ds P7esentat0on Ce7emony 3 F70day, 23 Feb7ua7y 2007 2 © State of Victoria, 2007 Published by the Communications Division Department of Education 2 Treasury Place East Melbourne, Vic. 3002 (03) 9637 2869 www.education.vic.gov.au/about/events The Bracks Government is committed to promoting physical and sport education in schools to help encourage a healthier lifestyle for all Victorian students. We are leading the way as the only State or Territory to mandate school sport and physical education at both primary and secondary school levels.
As well as physical benefits, sport also teaches children other important lessons like confidence, persistence, sportsmanship and competition. The 13th annual Victorian School Sports Awards recognise exceptional sporting achievements by students, teachers and volunteers from our government schools across the State. A total of 43 awards will be presented during today 9s prestigious ceremony 3 39 to primary and secondary students who have excelled in their chosen sport at regional, national and even international levels.
Students will be recognised in 16 sports ranging from taekwondo and cricket to athletics and swimming. All winning students have shown a tremendous passion for their sport and many previous winners have gone on to achieve great sporting fame. Previous award winners ... more.

include Jessica Bibby from the Australian Opals, Cameron White from the Victorian Bushrangers and AFL sporting heroes Anthony Rocca, Josh Fraser and more recently Dale Thomas.

But there are also many unsung heroes who contribute to an individual 9s sporting success including their families, schools, teachers and coaches 4 a number of whom will be recognised throughout today 9s presentation ceremony. Congratulations to every award recipient 4 your extraordinary talent and achievements are an inspiration to your school peers and a tremendous example of the importance of sport in developing healthy, young lives. John Lenders, MP Minister for Education 2006 V0cto70an School Spo7ts Awa7ds 3 \x9 V0cto70an School Spo7ts Awa7ds The annual Victorian School Sports Awards are the highest sporting accolade in Victoria 9s primary and secondary government school sectors.

Presented for the first time in 1994, the awards recognise excellence across all categories of major school sports and are given to students, coaches, parents and volunteers who have excelled or made an outstanding contribution to school sport. This year, 37 individual student awards, each known as a Sporting Blue, will be presented across 16 school sports to young athletes for their outstanding success in 2006. The origin of the Sporting Blue is based in the history of English sport, when in 1936 during a boat race between Cambridge and Oxford Universities, a Cambridge oarsman tied a light blue ribbon to the bow of the his boat (the colour of his school, Eton College).

A dark blue ribbon was then ascribed to Oxford (the colour of Christ Church College). Subsequently, a Sporting Blue became identified around the world as an accolade of sporting excellence by young people, and is distinguished by a two-coloured blue ribbon attached to a traditional bronze medallion. The Department of Education believes it is fitting to present Sporting Blue awards as a reflection of the high standard of talent and dedication demonstrated by aspiring young athletes in Victorian government schools.

M aster of C ereMonies J ason M C C artney Jason McCartney became a national hero in the wake of the Bali Bombings and epitomises the Australian fighting spirit. His story is one of humanity overcoming adversity. Jason, a young Australian with an exceptional talent to play Australian Rules Football, was thrust into the hearts and minds of all Australians through his courageous fight-back from horrible burns he suffered in Bali.

Few will forget his triumphant return to AFL football on the evening of 6 June 2003. He helped in scoring the winning goal, but his ultimate glory was a victory over terrorism and a cwin d for all those who survived Bali. Jason was awarded an OAM in October 2003.

Jason 9s career highlights include being a member of the AFL 200 Club, Kangaroos Best Clubman 1999 and 2000 and 1998 Pre-season Premiership Kangaroos. His career started when he was drafted at pick number 4 in the 1990 National Draft by the Collingwood Football Club. Following 38 games with the Pies, Jason crossed over to the Adelaide Crows where he played a further 37 games.

In 1998, Jason returned to Victoria to play for the Kangaroos and went on to play 182 senior games. Currently Jason works for the Australian Football League in the area of Game Development as National Youth Coordinator. He is also involved with the Channel Nine football commentary team, and supports a number of charities including Life Support @ The Alfred Foundation and KIDS Foundation.

\xa o rder of P roCeedings 6 GUESTS SEATED (12-00 noon) CEREMONY COMMENCES National Anthem: Performed by Joining the Chorus * Jazz ensemble WELCOME: Master of Ceremonies: Jason McCartney Key Address: Kirstie Marshall, MP PRESENTATION OF AWARDS Guest presenters: Kevin Muscat 3 Melbourne Victory and Australian Socceroos Lauren Hewitt 3 Sprint relay champion Athletics Athlete with a disability Badminton Cross country Diving Soccer Grilled fillet of chicken on a ratatouille of Italian vegetables, wedges of crisp rosemary roasted potatoes and baby beans drizzled with a light chicken glaze and topped with gremolata Alternating with Roasted noisettes of lamb with an onion and mint stuffing on chunks of roasted potato with a wedge of pumpkin and green beans enhanced with a light apple glaze Vegetarian Option (available on prior request) Baked vegetarian lasagne layered with char-grilled vegetables, Napoli sauce and creamy cheese sauce, accompanied by a crisp garden salad Served with sour dough rolls, oven-baked pita and white batard DESSERT Soft meringue disc topped with a citrus curd, macerated berries and double cream Soft drinks, coffee, tea served with Peter Rowland signature chocolate and honey almond biscotti Menu 7 o rder of P roCeedings * Joining the Chorus is a Victorian Government initiative that provides young aspiring performers from Victorian government schools with the opportunity to develop and exhibit their talent at professional engagements.
