WESLEYAN FOOTBALL FRIENDS OF July, 2007 " Freeman Athletic Center " Wesleyan University " Middletown, CT 06459 Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends of Wesleyan Football, Hello from Wesleyan University. I hope all is well with you as we move full swing into the summer months and the Anal planning phase of the 2007-08 academic year. The purpose of this newsletter is to provide information about the Wesleyan Football Program while also touching on some ways in which I think alumni, parents and friends of Wes- leyan Football can help improve the program.

Topics included in this newsletter are recruiting, the Cardinal Club, a note from our captains for the 2007 season and fundraising for football. Although the 2006 season was not up to the level we had hoped for, our players worked extremely hard and made marked improvements over the previous season. It was a wonderful group to work with and their efforts were greatly appreciated by the coaching staff.

Our captains (Corey Baker, Phil Banks and Jeff McLaren) provided outstanding leadership throughout the season and were instrumental in improving the squad. With a number of freshmen and sophomores seeing signiAcant playing time, it was important that our seniors become leaders and ... more. less.

all 13 of them responded. At our awards day (sponsored by the Cardinal Club), Don Lowery '77 was the featured guest speaker.

Don spoke to the team and their parents about his experiences with the New England Patriots and was extremely well-received by the group. Award winners included: " 1st team All-NESCAC - Quincy Francis '06, LB " 2nd team All-NESCAC - Joe Pepe '07, DB ; Ryan Walsh '09, WR " NESCAC All-Academic Team - Zach Librizzi '08, QB ; Tim O'Callaghan '08, LB ; Joe Pepe '07, DB ; Pat Senat '08, OLB " Cardinal Club Scholar-Athlete Award - Corey Baker '07 & Joe Pepe '07 " Offensive Player of the Year - Phil Banks '07 " Defensive Player of the Year - Quincy Francis '06 " Special Teams Player of the Year - A.J. Taucher '08 " Thomas Eck Award - Corey Baker '07 " C.

Everett Bacon Award - Quincy Francis '06 " Christopher Luke Yohan Award - Jeff McLaren '06 We also named captains for the 2007 season: Tom Addonizio '07 (Delbarton School, N.J.), Zach Librizzi (Essex HS, Vt.) and Tim O'Callaghan (West Babylon HS, N.Y.) I have great conA - dence in each of these three young men as they lead us into the 2007 season. Our players are dedicated student-athletes, working dili- gently in the classroom and on the Aeld. They are currently doing a great job following up their spring off-season training with a summer workout routine in preparation for the upcoming cam- paign.

The players and coaching staff are excited about the fall and look forward to a great season. The 2007 schedule is printed in this newsletter and we hope that you will be able to see us play in the fall. Sincerely, Frank Hauser 879, Head Football Coach 860-685-2908 fhauser@wesleyan.edu #70, Co- rey Baker '07, Thomas Eck Award winner and Cardinal Club Scholar- Athlete Award winner #7, Ryan Walsh '09, 2nd-team all- NESCAC #5, Quincy Francis '06, 1st-team all-NE- SCAC, Defensive Player of the Year and C.

Everett Ba- con Award winner #3, Joe Pepe '07, 2nd-team all-NE- SCAC, academic all-NES- CAC and Cardinal Club Scholar- Athlete Award winner Phone Conversations with Student-Athletes : An extremely valu- able tool for us in recruiting is a call to a player by a Wesleyan alumnus. We have always asked football alums to call recruits in whom we have a strong interest and it has been very helpful in yielding those who have been admitted. Prospective players are often positively inBuenced by the accomplishments of our football alumni.

In general, we wait until we are sure that a recruit is a good player and has a good chance to be admitted to Wesleyan before asking an alumnus to call. We also try to match alumni with the interests of the players. For example, when a recruit is interested in medicine, we usually ask an alumnus in that Aeld to contact him.

If you would be willing to contact players for us next year, please send me an email (fhauser@wesleyan.edu) including your major at Wes- leyan and your occupation or Aeld of expertise. You can also call me at 860-685-2908. Contacts with Local High School Coaches : Alumni and friends of the program can contact high school coaches to ask about players who may be academically and athletically qualiAed for Wesleyan.

When doing so, alumni and friends are subject to the same NESCAC and NCAA rules to which Wesleyan coaches are subject. Some limitations include: not being allowed to go to the school to talk with the coach or player; not being al- lowed to go to the home of the coach or player; and not being allowed to set up a meeting at another location with the coach or player. We are able to call the coach and ask him to recommend players to us; thus, alumni and friends can do the same.

When speaking with a coach, the key information we would like to have is the player 9s name, school and if possible, his home phone number. As stated above, we can get the rest of the information by talking to the coach and/or the player. 2007 POTENTIAL NEWCOMERS TO WESLEYAN FOOTBALL Name, Class Pos.

Ht./Wt. Being listed here in no way binds a candidate to the team. Note from the 2007 Football Captains The Wesleyan football team has a commitment to success and with that comes hard work and a common goal to win.

Everyone on the team knows that we are capable of many more victories and realizes that this can happen with more work, especially in the off-season. This winter and throughout the spring the entire team was dedicated to Wesleyan football's lifting and conditioning programs. Every player displayed the commitment, work ethic and determina- tion to improve themselves not only individually but as a dedicated Wesleyan teammate.

This is crucial in becoming one of the elite teams in this NESCAC conference. The program has many talented starters returning from both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball and young talent that is eager to step up and make an immediate impact. The team is looking to improve on its record from last year in pursuit of victories over Amherst and Williams for the Little Three Championship and the NESCAC title.

We are excited for the upcoming 2007 season fall and look forward to your support throughout the year. Tom Addonizio '08 2007 Tri-Captain Zach Librizzi '08 2007 Tri-Captain Tim O'Callaghan '08 2007 Tri-Captain Alumni Help in Recruiting As recruiting of the Wesleyan class of 2011 has concluded, I would like to thank the many alumni who helped in recruiting this year 9s fresh- man football class. This help included referring potential student-athletes to our football staff, phone conversations with student-athletes regarding the University and contacts with local high school coaches about prospects.

These are indispensable parts of recruiting at a school like Wesleyan. Since many people ask what they can do to help the recruiting effort at Wesleyan, I would like to explain how alumni and friends of the program are able to help. Referring potential student-athletes : One of the most difAcult parts of recruiting is identifying quality student-athletes.

As a coaching staff, we try to contact as many high school coaches as possible asking them to refer good football players who are also strong students. Due to the vast number of high schools with football programs, we are unable to contact all coaches by phone. Additionally, many of our mailings to coaches go unanswered.

This is an area where alumni and friends can help a great deal. If you see or hear about a good football player in your area, please let us know about him. Even just his name and high school is enough to get us started.

You may not know how strong he is as a student, but we can And that out quickly by talking to his coach. If you have more information about him (e.g. phone number, position, size, etc.), that is great, but we can begin the process with just his name and school.

Timing is the most important thing when referring players. Ideally we would like to hear about a player in the spring of his junior year or earlier, but we have time to start recruit- ing new players through mid-December of their senior year. The earlier we hear about a player, the better chance we have to get him interested in Wesleyan.

Once a player is recommended to us, we will contact him or his coach very quickly. After determining if he is in our academic range and seeing video of his football performance, we will decide if he is a viable candidate for us to recruit. We will invite him to visit campus.

Some of our best players in recent years have been referred to us by alumni, including Matt Perceval 800 (team captain, Arst-team All-Ameri - ca and three-time all-NESCAC wide receiver from South Dakota), Dion Mueller 901 (team captain and all-NESCAC linebacker from Colorado) and Brennan Carney 904 (team captain and four-year starter at quarterback from Vermont). There have been many others as well and it is likely that we would not have found out about these players if not for these referrals. Donation Form - Gifts Made Directly to Wesleyan All donations are tax-deductible.

Please note that these dollars do not count toward the unrestricted "Wesleyan Fund" or your class totals, but you will be counted as a "participant" in Wesleyan's current fundraising campaign. We hope you will also support the Wesleyan Fund each year. As you are well aware NESCAC has become an incredibly competitive league in all sports, but particularly football.

We know there is still a good distance between us, Williams and Trinity, but are conAdent we are closing the gap. As last year 9s results show, we feel we can play with anyone else right now. An important factor as we work towards this goal is gaining additional Anancial support for the football team.

The University is very generous to football, and all the athletic teams. However, additional funds can help make a real difference. Contributions via the Cardinal Club and directly to the school have played a crit- ical role in helping to fund many projects/items over the years such as the year-end banquet, the scholar-athlete award, and helping with recruiting expenses including paying part-time coaches additional money to help make off-season phone calls.

A few generous alums also have helped fund the football coaching internship, which has become a model that many other NESCAC schools have adopted. We also worked with Athletics Director John Biddiscombe and Vice President for Aca- demic Affairs Peter Patton to enhance the full-time football coaching staff. Last year we were very fortunate to bring on two new full-time coaches, one a replacement for a departed coach, the other in a new position.

Keith Hellstern 898 and Doug Mandigo have done a great job, as running backs coach and defensive coordinator, respectively. They also have taken our recruiting process to a new level. We feel that this year 9s recruiting class is the best we have seen in sometime.

We and some other alumni supporters feel that there is great potential for more Anancial assistance, and we seek your help. The Cardinal Club continues to seek your support, but you now have the option of giving directly to the football program through the University. Many alums, parents and friends have expressed interest in giving this way, in order to get fundraising credit from Wesleyan.

We agree that it is not important which fund you support, the key is making both options available. We are conAdent that this will result in more support for the program. In fact, with the support of a handful of generous donors who stepped forward, we received direct donations totalling about $20,000 during the Wesleyan 2006-07 fund year, which ended on June 30.

Along with the Cardinal Club donations this gives us a big boost as we head into the season, and we hope to build on this during the 2007-08 year. Details for making your donation can be found above, and don 9t hesitate to con- tact one of us if you have further questions. Again, we feel great about the future of Wesleyan football and look forward to achieving our goal of bringing a Little Three Championship home to Wesleyan.

Sincerely, Frank Hauser 879 Dave Bagatelle 886 Head Football Coach Chairman, The Cardinal Club, Inc. fhauser@wesleyan.edu dbagatelle@mac.com (860) 685-2908 (646) 408-1032 2007 UPPERCLASS RETURNEES/CANDIDATES Name Class Pos.
