HAMMER SENIOR NATURALIST, CASTELLOW HAMMOCK PARK W inter is the best season for tourists and locals alike to experience South Florida 9s pleasant weather and the great outdoors. Lesser and Greater Black- backed Gulls and Northern Gannets show up offshore, and astute birders might see these birds off of Crandon Park on Key Biscayne.

Farther inland, the trademark Anhingas begin nesting activities in January around Anhinga Trail in Everglades National Park. Look for their nests in the Pond-Apple trees near the boardwalk. Woodstorks also begin nesting during this time of year and a trip to Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary in Collier County should be on your cTo Do d list, especially if you have never visited this outstanding Audubon Sanctuary.

Pine Glades Lake in Everglades National Park and the canal along the Turner River Road in Big Cypress National Preserve are good places to watch for flocks of thousands of Tree Swallows as they swarm across the water surface to get a drink on the wing. They also swarm into Wax Myrtles to feast on the aromatic fruits of this native shrub. Look also for American Robins showing up in the southern counties of Florida as they migrate south into warmer climes.

During March each year bird feeders in our area might be graced with brilliant blue Indigo Buntings. Prior to March they are less noticeable because they 9ve been sporting their somewhat drab brown feathers, but the males molt in March in preparation for migration to their nesting grounds to the north. If you are a wildflower enthusiast, winter and early spring are a good time to see a multitude of colorful blossoms, especially in Everglades prairies.

The prairies just inside the main entrance to Everglades National Park were burned this past summer so they will be prime for a grand show of wildflowers. Always make mental notes when you see fire in prairie or pineland habitat during the summer, and then return in the fall, winter, or spring to see one of the best wildflower shows that nature has to offer. Join Miami-Dade County Park naturalists on bird walks, wildflower walks, and other educational and adventurous excursions into the wilds of South Florida.

For information, call the Eco-Adventure office at (305) 365-3018.
