The Circulatory System Lesson Plan Objectives: " Students will explore the path that blood takes through the heart and lungs and study the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide that takes place in the lungs. " Students will create a circulatory system presentations that use SMART Board technology McREL Standards: " Student knows that multi-cellular organisms have a variety of specialized cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems that perform specialized functions and that the function of these systems affect one another. (Science Standard 5, Level 3, Benchmark 4) " Students know appropriate software for task (Technology Standard 2, Level 2, Benchmark 5) Resources Needed Prior to beginning this project, students will need: " The Circulatory System Project Page " The Circulatory System Information and Collection Grid " The Circulatory System Rubric and Scoring Guide " Notebook 10" Software " SMART Board How-to Cards " Internet and book references on the circulatory system and SMART Boards Internet Resources http://kidshealth.org/kid/htbw/heart.html http://www.kidsbiology.com/human_biology/index.php http://www.brainpop.com/health/circulatorysystem/circulatorysystem/preview.weml Procedure Student Preparation 1.

The students need to have a basic understanding of the circulatory system, and how oxygen and carbon dioxide are carried and exchanged in the lungs. Show a diagram similar to the one of the circulatory system found ... more. less.

Using the spotlight function of the SMART Board, point out the various parts of the heart and lungs.

Show the students the path that blood and oxygen take through the body. Ask the following questions: How does blood get to the lungs? Why are the arteries shown as red and the veins displayed as blue?

How do you think the oxygen gets into the blood? 2. Explain to students that these are the questions they will need to research for their presentations.

Share relevant websites with students, as well as pictures they can use from the Notebook Gallery (you may need to add more relevant pictures to your gallery). 3. Give students copies of The Circulatory System Project Page, The Circulatory System Information Collection Grid, and The Circulatory System Scoring Guide and Rubric.

4. Next, divide students into groups of 4. 5.

Review each of the handouts and be sure each group understands what the project entails and the expectations outlined in the rubric. 6. Have students brainstorm their ideas in their groups and think about how to best present their information on the SMART Board.

Creating the SMART Board Presentation 7. Once students have completed The Circulatory System Information Collection Grid, they can begin to design their presentation in Notebook 10" . 8.

If students are unfamiliar with the Notebook 10" software, use the How-to cards to teach them the basic uses of the program. You may want to point out cards that include techniques and effects that can be used to enhance their presentation (e.g., embedding audio/video into their presentations, creating animation links, etc.). 9.

Have the groups create their presentation slides of the circulatory system. Remind them to research thoroughly to find relevant information and pictures that will compliment their presentations and make them more interesting. 10.

Have students print the slides to their presentation and practice presenting them as a group. Assessment A combination of assessment methods can be used. The Circulatory System Rubric and Scoring Guide offers a framework for objective grading and standardization.

Extension Ideas " Audio/Video Have students record pronunciation and definition audio files of the circulatory system vocabulary they labeled in their presentations and use the Insert Sound function to embed the audio files to the vocabulary words. " Alternate Body System Have students research another body system that is related to the circulatory system and create a Notebook presentation to share with the class. The Circulatory System Project Page Student Doctors Wanted!

The Children 9s Hospital of Intelligent Looking Doctors (CHILD), in your area, needs your help. They are hosting a health fair in one week and need students to make presentations to show at the fair. Each presentation needs to include information about a system of the body.

It needs to describe how the system functions and give details about any processes that it goes through. CHILD has teams of students from different schools in the community working on different body systems. Your school has been assigned the circulatory system.

You and your group of student doctors need to research the circulatory system. Then, create a presentation that explains the cycle of how blood receives and carries oxygen through the body. Your presentation should include the relationship between the heart, the lungs, veins, and arteries.

It should also show the path that the blood takes through the circulatory system. Your presentation needs to be simple and clear. With your help, this year 9s CHILD health fair will be the best yet!

Resources Web resources are available on the circulatory system at the following web addresses: http://kidshealth.org/kid/htbw/heart.html http://www.kidsbiology.com/human_biology/index.php http://www.brainpop.com/health/circulatorysystem/circulatorysystem/preview.weml More Internet resources can be found using a search engine. Three possible choices are Yahooligans, Lycoszone, and Ask Jeeves for Kids . Keywords for this lesson might include: the circulatory system, heart, lungs, and blood and oxygen.

The Circulatory System Information Collection Grid You have been asked by the Children 9s Hospital of Intelligent Looking Doctors to create a presentation on the circulatory system. Use the boxes below as you research to plan what you will include in the different slides of your presentation. The Circulatory System Rubric and Scoring Guide Criteria 0 3 4 Points 5 3 7 Points 8 3 10 Points Self Score Peer Score Teacher Score Explanation of the Circulatory System The explanation includes little to no information on the circulatory system.

A basic explanation of the circulatory system is included. A well developed explanation with main points and details are included. Visuals presented There are no visuals in the presentation.

The visuals in the presentation are not engaging or relevant. The visuals are well thought out and labeled appropriately. Presentation uses SMART Board The presentation uses the SMART Board as a normal whiteboard with projector.

The presentation uses at least one SMART Board tool such as the spotlight or pointer . The presentation uses simple and more advanced SMART Board tools. Organization of information The information presented is unorganized or unclear.

The information presented is organized, but confusing at times. The information is organized in a clear and concise manner. Overall appearance of the presentation The presentation lacks a polished integration of content and aesthetics.

The presentation has good integration of content and visuals. The presentation looks professional and polished. Group cooperation with research materials and resources The student does not follow directions or work well with members of the group .

The student works well with members of the group, but needs to stay focused on the project. The student w orks well with all members of the group, motivates others, and stays focused. Comment Box Total Score
